Vietnam’s first electrolytic aluminium project has reached another major milestone, with the second phase of the 450,000-tonne-per-year (tpa) Da Nong project producing its first batch of molten primary aluminium on October 31, 2026. The milestone, achieved by China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (NFC), which is the project’s general contractor, came four months and three days ahead of the contractual schedule, officially moving the second phase from construction to trial production. According to a recent report, Rio Tinto and the union will hold another meeting in Vancouver next week to discuss the Kitimat aluminium smelter strike. As the strike enters its fourth week, Rio Tinto and Unifor union have decided to resume negotiations to see if a collective agreement can be renewed. A week ago, on August 12, a similar meeting was held in Kitimat between top officials from Rio Tinto’s Montreal headquarters and Unifor Local 2301’s president in hopes of ending the strike at the smelter, continuing since July 25. China’s production of aluminium declined for the third month in a row due to power shortages. The primary aluminium output came in at 3.26 million tonnes in July, an increase of 7.4% year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. On a monthly basis, the production reduced by 0.9% from June’s output of 3.29 million tonnes.
