FIFA World Cup 2034 to drive Saudi aluminium demand, set to surge 80% by 2030

Saudi Arabia’s aluminium consumption could climb to as much as 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, as the Kingdom ramps up infrastructure and industrial development ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

Oklahoma aluminium smelter project faces Inola referendum and the $4b facility could change location

The USD 4 billion Oklahoma aluminium smelter project planned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Century Aluminum is facing a new hurdle in Inola, where the city council has extended a moratorium on smelter permits and called a referendum on the proposed facility. The 750,000-tonne-per-year aluminium smelter, announced in January, is expected to more than double current US primary aluminium production and would be the first new primary aluminium smelter in the country in almost 50 years. It would also become the largest source of primary aluminium in the Western Hemisphere. The project has taken on added importance as the US imports roughly 60 per cent of the primary aluminium it uses. Aluminium is essential to transportation, defence, aerospace and electrical infrastructure, making...

India won’t initiate countervailing duty on certain aluminium products from Malaysia

Following a complaint from the Indian aluminium industry, the commerce ministry's investigative arm, Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), undertook an examination into suspected export subsidies by Malaysia on 'aluminium primary foundry alloy ingot in various forms' and recommended enforcement of the tax on January 31 this year. After evaluating the final conclusions of DGTR, the central government has chosen not to accept its recommendations, said a Department of Revenue office memorandum. Domestic enterprises claimed in an application to the directorate that subsidised imports from Malaysia are causing them significant harm and demanded the introduction of countervailing tariffs on the imports. While the DGTR proposes the duty, it is up to the finance minister to decide whether...

Aluminium giant Alcoa urges the Spanish government to speed up permission process for wind farms

According to our report from Europe, the Spain-based works council of Alcoa Corp’s San Ciprian aluminium smelter is pressing the government body to lessen the duration of the permission procedure for new wind energy projects that generate the fodder for the power-consuming facilities. After years of toiling with high electricity bills, prevailing labour disputes and profit losses, Alcoa is now taking time to renovate its plant and get hold of more effective power purchase agreements (PPAs). Its San Ciprian smelter in the Galicia region, northwest Spain will remain downsized until January 2024 to give Alcoa some to restructure its courses. The quest for renewable energy PPAs had begun in late December 2021; right after the US aluminium producer signed a new labour agreement to retrench the...

Buying enthusiasm was noticeable due to widening spot discounts in east China, whereas arrivals of stocks sent inventories in Gongyi lower. The chart below indicates the current status of primary aluminium inventories across China in more details: In Wuxi, primary aluminium inventories plummeted by 38,000 tonnes to stand at 377,000...

CRU alerts possible adverse impact on European aluminium if CBAM includes indirect emissions

The independent commodity analyst CRU has published a new report for the European aluminium industry pointing out negative impacts of a wrongly designed Carbon Border Adjustment Measure (CBAM). According to CRU, if CBAM covers indirect emissions and removes existing carbon leakage measures, European aluminium smelters will become cost uncompetitive. The study contains the complexities of CBAM regulation and forecasts the aluminium production cost to rise by 24 to 31 per cent. The report has strategically noted the impact of CBAM on primary aluminium and selected downstream products under individual scenarios. Given the unique challenges aluminium industry faces for being an energy-intensive production process, CRU report suggests an initial trial of CBAM on direct-emissions, as originally...
