Oklahoma aluminium smelter project faces Inola referendum and the $4b facility could change location

The USD 4 billion Oklahoma aluminium smelter project planned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Century Aluminum is facing a new hurdle in Inola, where the city council has extended a moratorium on smelter permits and called a referendum on the proposed facility. The 750,000-tonne-per-year aluminium smelter, announced in January, is expected to more than double current US primary aluminium production and would be the first new primary aluminium smelter in the country in almost 50 years. It would also become the largest source of primary aluminium in the Western Hemisphere. The project has taken on added importance as the US imports roughly 60 per cent of the primary aluminium it uses. Aluminium is essential to transportation, defence, aerospace and electrical infrastructure, making...

Primary aluminium recap: Falling aluminium demand causes Hydro to partially curtail production at its Karmøy facility; Australia's largest aluminium smelter plans to fast-track its decarbonization drive

The global primary aluminium segment witnessed a lot of events. To begin with, on Thursday, September 29, the global aluminium benchmark price saw a dramatic expansion of US$181 per tonne due to the ban on Russian supplies by the London Metal Exchange. As a result of traders' worries about supply shortages following the London Metal Exchange's declaration that it was considering blocking new Russian metals from accessing the market, the price of nickel and aluminium rose dramatically on Thursday. On the other hand, the Norwegian aluminium smelter had to partially cut its aluminium output at Hydro Karmøy and Hydro Husnes due to declining demand for aluminium billets in Europe owing to the unfavourable economic climate in Europe and rising energy expenses. On the other hand, Tomago...

The Kidričevo located Talum has been producing aluminium for more than 60 years and belongs to the category of top-notch producers. Anti-dumping measures sought by the French aluminium industry over Spain's cheap electric supply

In response to rising energy prices, Europe's aluminium plants started shutting down, while Russia and China increased imports. The Iberian gas price cap, supported by the EU, is allegedly causing unfair competition, according to representatives of the French aluminium industry, who are also seeking anti-dumping actions against Spain. The agreement is temporary and will take effect until May 31, 2023. With the European Commission, Spain and Portugal agreed to exclude the Iberian Peninsula from the EU's power market regulations in the spring. The deal established a temporary mechanism limiting the gas price to an average of €50 per megawatt-hour until the end of May, slashing power prices for many Spanish and Portuguese consumers in half. The EU executive approved the measures, stating...

Falling aluminium demand causes Hydro to partially curtail production at its Karmøy facility

Falling demand for aluminium billets in Europe due to the adverse European economic condition and rising energy prices has caused the Norwegian aluminium smelter to partially reduce its aluminium production in Hydro Karmøy and Hydro Husnes. The choice will result in a reduction in annual primary aluminium production capacity of 110,000–130,000 tonnes, including recently halted output for routine maintenance that has not yet been resumed. Once the curtailment is fully implemented, there will be a reduction in power use of somewhere between 170-200 MW overall. Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President and Head of Hydro Aluminium Metal stated, “The extraordinary situation in the European economy and energy market is causing market uncertainty and a decline in demand for our aluminium...
