
On 7th February 2022, Slovakia’s only primary aluminium producer Slovalco aluminium smelter has announced that it has further slashed its production to around 60% in regards to soaring energy prices, emissions allowances and absence of government compensation.

Slovalco mentioned that the axe in production completes as declared on 30th December, and it might drive through 2022 as it criticized the Slovak government for low compensation for energy-intense industries compared to other EU nations.
Norsk Hydro majority-owned stated aluminium producer, Slovalco stated, “Central Europe’s only smelter with an annual capacity of 175,000 tonnes of aluminium products, Slovalco shut 44 pots at the weekend after shutting 47 in late 2021 and now has 135 out of 226 pots in operation.”
Milan Vesely, the CEO of Slovalco said, “Electricity prices for the next year are 150 euros per megawatt-hour that are three times more than last year.”

However, the Company added by saying “Under current prices, the company would generate a loss of tens of millions of euros next year, while the risk of a complete shutdown was the highest in its history.”
The metal company employs over 450 people and 2,500 other jobs that are directly related to its operation. Though, the company said, “There would not be any job cut until a decision on the future is made.”
Slovalco called for the utilization of revenues from sales of emission allowances to be used to aid industries under threat.
The Slovakian Ministry of Economy said that Richard Sulik, the Economy Minister is anticipated to meet with Slovalco management on the issue.
