A signing ceremony between the Public Authority for Crafts Industries (PACI), represented by their Deputy Chairman Dr Isam bin Ali al Rawas, and Sohar Aluminium, represented by their CEO Henk Pauw, took place at PACI’s premises in Ghubrah yesterday. The agreement is a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties whereby PACI will provide the trainer and the study material, while Sohar Aluminium will provide the faculties and funding for the programme.

Sohar Aluminium is in the process of developing a training centre at its premises for aluminium craftwork, which will become the country’s first training centre for aluminium crafts. The centre will train selected women from low income families, from within the local community, on manufacturing aluminium crafts. It will be a 2 year training programme and it is hoped that after the training they will be able to use their skills to become entrepreneurs and manufacture handicrafts from aluminium so as to have their own source of income.

In his comments to members of the press corps on the occasion, al Rawas expressed the Authority’s thanks to Sohar Aluminiun for the support being given to the young Omani trainees. “Hopefully, this project will be successful and I am sure, from what I have seen in Sohar itself, that the preparations for this training are going well. Sohar Aluminium has prepared everything to ensure the success of the trainees. “We hope that we will have more co-operation with Sohar Aluminium and that we will be able to work together for further projects in the future.”

Pauw commented on the importance of the agreement and Sohar Aluminium’s Corporate Social Responsibilty (CSR). He said, the agreement is “very important for us because we want to give back to the community; create SME’s (Small and Medium sized Enterprises), but people need to be trained first before you can do that. “We think this can be a nice project and we want to combine our product – our metal — from which very nice souvenirs and corporate gift items can be made.” The project is due to commence in November with the first batch of 15 selected trainees.
