Montreal’s Orbite Aluminae Inc. has received Russian and Chinese patents for producing alumina from aluminous clays found in Quebec’s Gaspé area and from other ores. Both countries are among the world’s largest producers of alumina, the intermediate material used in smelting aluminum metal.

The patents cover processes used in Orbite’s Cap Chat high-purity alumina pilot plant and also cover future smelter-grade alumina processing.

Altogether, Orbite now has nine patents approved in the U.S., Canada, Australia, China and Russia. It also has 31 applications pending in nine countries, CEO Richard Boudreault said Tuesday.

He said commissioning of the high-purity alumina plant at Cap Chat is on target. It processes Gaspé clays and alumina samples will be shipped to clients in North America, Europe and Asia in the current quarter. The plant will be producing three tonnes of alumina daily and is likely to achieve higher levels of purity. By year-end, it should be producing at five tonnes daily.

Orbite also said the Quebec Government has named it winner of the 2013 PerformAS award in recognition of its innovations in the field of chemistry.
