Orbite Aluminae of Montreal has begun construction of its high purity alumina (HPA) production plant in Cap-Chat. The company has successfully run a pilot plant at the site, and now it will spend between $26 million and $30 million to bring the plant up to commercial capacity.

The original production plant was to have a capacity of 1 t/d, but the company said it is confident that the plant will operate at 3 t/d within 12 months of its commissioning without further significant capital expenditures.

Orbite is quick to acknowledge the expertise of suppliers who are part of the team seeing the project through to completion. Gastier, the general contractor, has promised plant commissioning later this year. Canam Group is in charge of the design and construction of the new building. Outotec is working on the alumina calcination portion of the project, and as part of the process hydrochloric acid will be produced. Emerson Process Management and its local partner Laurentide Controls are involved in enhancing the HPA extraction technology.

Denis Primeau, Orbite chief engineer said, "We are also being supported by many world leaders, such as Outotec, Andritz and Pfaudler. All are companies well able to meet the high quality criteria we have established."
