NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) plans to expand its renewable energy capacity from around 12 gigawatts (GW) to 60 GW by 2032, marking a major step in its clean-energy expansion strategy. The target forms part of parent company NTPC Limited’s broader ambition to reach 149 GW of installed power capacity, supported by renewable energy, thermal expansion and a proposed entry into nuclear generation.

The roadmap was outlined by P. Rahul, Deputy General Manager, Business Development – Green Hydrogen at NGEL, during the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026. Alongside renewable capacity additions, the company is advancing green hydrogen, energy storage and green chemicals projects.

15–16 GW renewable power requirement for Visakhapatnam hub

One of NTPC’s major initiatives is a green hydrogen hub at Visakhapatnam, designed to produce around 250,000 tonnes of green chemicals for export markets, including Japan, Singapore and Europe.

The planned output includes 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia, 0.5 million tonnes of methanol and 500,000 tonnes of urea and ESAF combined. The hub is expected to require approximately 15–16 GW of renewable energy to power its operations.

Rahul stated, “One is the green hydrogen hub that is for the production of green chemicals to the tune of 2.5 million tons and exporting it to green-chemicals-importing nations like Japan, Singapore and Europe.”

The project’s foundation stone has been laid, and execution has begun. Its proposed site in Visakhapatnam has also received in-principle state clearance for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) designation, aimed at supporting export competitiveness across Asia-Pacific and European markets.

CO2 battery and green hydrogen projects expand clean-tech portfolio

NTPC also showcased a CO2 battery, a non-lithium-based energy storage technology, alongside a model of a hydrogen-powered locomotive at the expo.

Highlighting the battery’s potential, Rahul said it “doesn't depend on the key minerals used in lithium-ion batteries or other battery storage systems.” The technology represents another area of the company’s efforts to diversify energy storage solutions.

The company is also expanding its domestic green hydrogen activities through projects in Leh-Ladakh, Greater Noida, Surat-Kawas and Madhya Pradesh.

Nuclear feasibility studies underway across India

Beyond renewable energy and green fuels, NTPC is assessing the feasibility of entering nuclear power generation at multiple locations across the country. However, no specific site has been finalised.

Rahul clarified that the studies are still at a preliminary stage, stating, “So it is pan-India, so we are doing feasibility studies at various locations. So, once those feasibilities are completed, then only we'll be able to say, but there's no specific location; it's pan-India studies that we're doing for nuclear.”

Together, the renewable capacity target, green hydrogen hub and emerging storage technologies form part of NTPC’s broader plan to diversify its generation portfolio and expand its clean-energy footprint.
