Aluminium can recycling between Norway and the UK is set to continue at scale, with Novelis and Infinitum extending their long-running partnership.
{alcircleadd}The setup is fairly straightforward but effective. Used beverage cans collected across Norway are sent to Novelis’ recycling plant in Latchford, where they’re processed and turned back into new cans. It’s one of those rare cases where the “circular economy” idea actually works in practice, not just on paper.
For both sides, the extension is less about launching something new and more about making what already exists run better, especially when it comes to logistics, consistency, and material quality.

“This partnership demonstrates how circular systems can work at scale,” said Alexandre Gellert, pointing to the steady flow of post-consumer aluminium feeding directly into production.
“Novelis is a critical partner in closing the loop for beverage cans collected through our deposit system,” said Kjell Olav A. Maldum, adding that visibility over volumes and timelines helps keep the system predictable and efficient.
The bigger picture here is emissions and recycled content. Novelis has been pushing its 3x30 targets, which aim to lift recycled content to 75 per cent while cutting emissions intensity below 3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of product by 2030. Deals like this basically feed into that.

At the same time, the company is operating on a much larger global footprint. It supplies aluminium products across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America, with end markets ranging from beverage cans to automotive and aerospace. In fiscal 2025, it reported USD 17.1 billion in revenue, reinforcing its position as one of the biggest recyclers in the space.
Novelis is also part of Hindalco Industries under the Aditya Birla Group, which gives it a wider base across the aluminium value chain.
Infinitum has been running Norway’s deposit return system since the late 1990s and is still focused on pushing collection rates higher and making sure more cans actually make it back into the recycling loop.
