Noranda resumes Los Angeles alumina operations
Noranda reduced operating levels on Aug. 28 ahead of the storm, a spokesman told AMM. Over the next few days, the storm caused power generation disruptions, forcing Noranda to halt alumina production entirely.
Following a damage assessment, power was restored on Aug. 31, allowing employees to safely begin the restart process on Sept. 1.
As of Sept. 6, the refinery was back to about 75 percent of normal flow rates, and Noranda said it expects the refinery will return to full production later this month.
"Noranda is working cooperatively with its alumina customers to serve their needs," the company said in a statement.
Franklin, Tenn.-based Noranda said it does not expect the outage at Gramercy, which has an annual alumina capacity of 1.2 million tonnes, to disrupt aluminum production at its New Madrid, Missouri smelter.
