Netherlands sees YoY increase in alumina import; Jamaica tops 2018 exporter list

The global trade data suggest that the Netherlands will import 21% more alumina in 2019 than last year. The country’s import of alumina came in at 1193453 tonnes last year. Jamaica was the top supplier of alumina to the country in 2018, according to recent statistics. Jamaica’s export to the Netherlands in 2018 stood at 389254 tonnes.
Other alumina exporting countries to the Netherland were Ireland (334515 tonnes), Spain (197862 tonnes), India (92431 tonnes), the USA (36868 tonnes) and Germany (35995 tonnes) among others.
According to recent estimates, the Netherlands imported about 1193453 tonnes of alumina in 2018. The figure represents an increase of 3% from the previous year’s import volume when it reached 1162913 tonnes. In 2019, the country is estimated to import about 1440484 tonnes, an increase of 21% from last year.


In 2018, the Netherlands’ alumina import was estimated to stand at USD404 million, up by about 26% from USD322 million in 2017, according to our third-party data. The cost of import for alumina in 2019 is estimated to be USD479 million, up 19% year-over-year.
