{alcircleadd}The Netherlands is home to one of the notable aluminium smelting operations in the world, based in Delfzijl. The Delfzijl aluminium smelter in Farmsum, the Netherlands, started its journey as Aldel in 1966. The company engages in aluminium smelting and also offers rolling ingots and aluminium extrusion billets to the rolling mills and extrusion companies.
So, possessing one of the biggest aluminium markets in the world, it is needless to say that the Netherlands is known for importing a considerable amount of alumina every year. In fact, the Netherlands’ estimated alumina import volume is seen increasing year on year.
Here, we will take a glance at the Netherlands’ alumina import in every first half of 2016, 2017, and 2018. According to the global export-import data, the Netherlands’ estimated alumina import in H1 2016 had stood at 172,364 tonnes in total. In H1 2017, the estimated volume increased to 567,631 tonnes while that in H1 2018 rose by 8.41 per cent to total 615419 tonnes.

The global export-import data further shows that in the entire year of 2018, the Netherlands would likely import a total volume of 1.22 million tonnes of alumina. In 2016 and 2017, the country’s estimated alumina import volumes were at 334,743 tonnes and 1.16 million tonnes, respectively.

However, despite a quarters-on-quarters rise in import volume, the estimated import cost in H1 2018 stood down at US$ 175 million than the contemporary period of the previous year. In H1 2017, the cost was at US$ 298 million while that in H1 2016 was at US$ 60 million. The global data shows the Netherlands’ estimated alumina import cost in the entire year of 2018 would likely be around US$ 1887 million.
