Nalco bags the prestigious CII-EXIM Business Excellence Award 2023

National Aluminum Company Ltd. (Nalco)'s Alumina Refinery at Damanjodi has been honoured with the CII-EXIM Bank Business Excellence Award 2023, the most prestigious recognition for outstanding business practices.

The announcement was made at the CII Quality Summit 2023 in Bengaluru.

The refinery's commitment to business excellence and continuous efforts towards quality has led to this esteemed award. Prior to this, the Refinery Plant had received Gold Plus and Platinum recognitions in previous years.

From 2019 to 2022, they secured the CII-EXIM Bank Business Excellence Platinum Award.
In 2018, the Alumina Refinery of NALCO received the CII-EXIM Bank Business Excellence Award in the Gold Plus category.
In 2018, Nalco's Panchpatmali Mines was awarded the Gold Plus at the CII National Quality Summit from 2020 to 2022.

The award, based on the internationally recognised EFQM Excellence Model, is considered one of the highest honours in the country for Business Excellence. Instituted by CII and the Export-Import Bank of India, the award aims to enhance the competitiveness of Indian businesses.

The presentation took place at the Quality Summit in Bengaluru.

Situated in Damanjodi, Odisha, the Alumina Refinery is crucial to Nalco's operational prowess. Positioned approximately 14 kilometres from the bauxite mine at Panchpatmali, the refinery plays a vital role in the seamless transformation of mined-out bauxite into high-quality alumina.

The logistics of this transformation are impressive, with a 14.6-kilometer long single-light multi-curve cable belt conveyor facilitating the transportation of 1800 tonnes per hour (TPH) of bauxite from the captive mine to the refinery. This efficient process ensures a steady supply chain, underscoring Nalco's commitment to operational excellence.

The Alumina Refinery boasts a capacity of 22.75 lakh TPA (tonnes per annum). This substantial capacity caters to the company's internal needs for producing primary aluminium at the smelter and generates surplus alumina available for sale to third parties in export markets. This dual functionality positions the refinery as a dynamic player in internal production and the global market.

In the financial year 2021-22, the Alumina Refinery, alongside the Aluminum Smelter, achieved a record-breaking performance. Operating at 100 per cent capacity utilisation, Nalco showcased its operational efficiency, breaking previous records and reaffirming its commitment to excellence in the aluminium industry. This remarkable feat underscores Nalco's position as a leader in the sector and sets the stage for continued success in the years to come.
