Students and families from the Moses Lake school worked together to collect a good amount of aluminium soda can tabs to support the Ronald McDonald House. Stephanie Martin of the Moses Lake School District said that kids from all primary schools collected about 350,000 aluminium can tabs to contribute to the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane, with assistance from herself and the district's 11 librarians.

The large collection of aluminium can tabs was contained in 27 5-gallon buckets. Each bucket holds 14 pounds of soda can tabs, for 378 pounds. Each pound of recyclable aluminium tabs is worth 50 cents, bringing the total value to $189. Students accumulated that many tabs during the 180-day academic year. Martin, the library secretary for the school system, says she's been collecting soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House for seven years.
The Ronald McDonald House in Spokane provides temporary housing for loved ones of children undergoing long-term hospital care. The Ronald McDonald House provides a free hotel room and pays all food expenses. Martin estimated that the Spokane Ronald McDonald House received yearly $16,000 in recycled aluminium beverage can tabs. The organisation collects the tabs and transports them to a recycling facility that pays for the tabs.
