Meadow partners with East Coast Canning to launch resealable aluminium cans

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

East Coast Canning is preparing to roll out a new resealable aluminium can format in Australia and New Zealand after signing a partnership with Swedish packaging innovator Meadow. The deal will see the Australian company act as the regional gateway for the company’s MEADOW KAPSUL system, taking the technology into sectors well beyond its traditional beverage base.

Under the agreement, East Coast Canning will supply printed cans alongside the KAPSUL system’s bespoke resealable components and dispensers. The arrangement is aimed at brand owners across food and drink, personal care, home care and other consumer goods categories, positioning the company as the local enabler of the technology’s expansion.

Chris Kelly, co-founder of East Coast Canning, said, “We have been closely following MEADOW KAPSUL’s journey for nearly three years, recognising the immense potential of this transformative technology.” According to him, this would open business avenues for the players in the food and beverage, beauty, home and personal care.

He added, “Our deep understanding of the canning supply chain, from printing to filling and consultation, makes East Coast Canning uniquely positioned to accelerate the adoption of this game-changing solution in Australia and New Zealand.”

The system’s central innovation is a resealable mechanism that lets aluminium cans be reused or consumed over multiple sittings, addressing the engineering hurdles that have traditionally confined cans to single-use formats.

Meadow and its partners are already trialling applications such as body wash and shampoo, supported by a distinctive “daisy topping crimp” that clearly indicates non-ingestible products. Other uses under exploration include pharmaceuticals, sauces and resealable single-serve energy drinks.

Meadow’s CEO and co-founder, Victor Ljungberg, described the partnership as an important step towards global scalability. He has stated, “Partnering with East Coast Canning marks a major step in making aluminium-based packaging accessible on a global scale. Their deep integrated expertise and commitment to innovation make them an ideal partner to introduce MEADOW KAPSUL to Australia and New Zealand.”

Instead of acting purely as a contract filler, East Coast Canning will concentrate on supplying the complete packaging inputs for the KAPSUL system. This will allow existing contract aluminium can manufacturers and brand owners to incorporate the format directly on their production lines, a model the company says will help support scale and market reach.

The sustainability proposition draws on aluminium’s well-established recycling infrastructure and strong recovery rates. East Coast Canning’s vertically integrated operations across supply chain, printing, filling and packaging consulting strengthen its position as a technical partner for brands looking to transition into the KAPSUL format or build new products around it.
