Smol is revamping its home care range, shifting from familiar recycled plastics to a sturdy and durable recycled aluminium. The company has rolled out 500 ml aluminium bottles across several of its key products, such as washing liquid, stain gel, fabric conditioner, multipurpose spray and bathroom spray, each fitted with pumps or triggers made from recycled plastic.

Smol’s latest container range is not just a simple packaging tweak but rather a crucial part of its broader strategy of marketing household products. The bottles integrate directly with the brand’s existing refill system and align with the growing consumer appetite for circular packaging.

Also, producing recycled aluminium comes with significant environmental advantages because it requires 95 per cent less energy than making virgin metal and approximately 90 per cent less energy than recycled glass manufacturing.

The company, which already relies on recycled plastic for much of its home care line, says the new option gives customers an alternative material with stronger sustainability credentials. In typical Smol style, they describe the bottle’s life cycle with a touch of personality: its aluminium “has already done its job in many previous lives” and is now ready to serve as a “bottle-for-life.”
Alongside the packaging shift, Smol has introduced four new colour options for its foaming handwash collection — honey, pistachio, petal and slate.
The move comes as aluminium packaging gains traction across personal care. Brands and manufacturers today are embracing circularity no longer as an option but as a business imperative. In recent months, Ball Corporation, Unilever, and Alcoa Corporation revealed the first aerosol can produced using Elysis technology, a carbon-free aluminium smelting method.
Momentum is also visible in Europe, with Meadow, a Swedish aluminium startup partnering with Polish maker Fillsy to build a facility in Żyrardów, which will become the first in the region to mass-produce Meadow’s lightweight aluminium system. At Cosmetic Business 2025 in Munich, manufacturers showcased several sophisticated applications of aluminium, which revealed the growing popularity of the metal over glass and plastic. Tubex featured its MonoSense tube as one of the most innovative items, which is an all-aluminium applicator crafted to provide a cooling sensation upon contact.
