Maspion Group to export $450 million household wares in 2012

Maspion (Maspion Group) is projecting its exports of household wares to reach $450 million in 2012, which is a 12.5 percent increase from last year, CEO Alim Markus said.
“This year, our exports can reach $450 million, composed of $250-300 million from aluminum products, $100 million from housewares and the rest from various other products,” Alim said on the sidelines of an Indonesian-European Union economic partnership promotion in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.
Alim also aired optimism that the total volume of production and its sales value would be able to increase by between 8 and 10 percent this year, in line with the healthy growth in domestic market needs and exports.
He said that by mid May, Maspion’s exports remained strong, even though the economic conditions in Europe and in the United States were still wrought with problems.
Exports to the United States topped the list in value at $350 million, with Japan coming second with approximately $90 million; the rest of the share went to the European market. Aluminum wares and housewares dominated Maspion’s exports, he said.
Ali, said that the company’s exports of aluminum sheets to the United States had already exceeded targets, saying that the product could compete with similar items from China because of the lower prices, but high quality.
“And that is also because we have obtained a 3 percent import duty reduction because we are categorized as a developing nation, while the import duty for China is at 5 percent,” Alim said.
He also said that he was optimistic that sales to the domestic market would continue to grow for the company, especially with a recent campaign to pick local product over imports.
“From our total Maspion production on sale, 60 percent are still absorbed by the domestic market while 40 percent are exported,” he said.
Maspion currently has five factories in East Java and one in Cibitung, Bekasi. Starting as a houseware producer, Maspion now offers consumer products, consumer industrial products and building materials. It also has businesses in the property and industrial estate, financial services, trading and distribution and other miscellaneous businesses.
