
The US dollar rose on Tuesday to near a five-week high the US dollar index closed at 97.689. Boris Johnson, who promised to withdraw the UK from the European Union with or without deal by the end of October, will replace Theresa May as Britain’s new prime minister. This will have a further bearing on currency movements today. LME base metals closed mixed on Tuesday and aluminium advanced 0.4%. SHFE aluminium sank 0.2%.Three-month LME aluminium hovered in a wide range on Tuesday, and finished the trading day 0.41% higher at US$1,821 per tonne. With a firmer US dollar, three months LME aluminium is expected to trade between US$1,800-1,840 per tonne today.

As on July 23, Tuesday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1794.50 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1795 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1820 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1821 per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1923 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1928 per tonne.
The LME aluminium opening stock registered dropped yesterday to 960175 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 692275 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 267900 tonnes.
LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1818 per tonne.
SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange (SME) dropped to US$ 2001 per tonne today from US$ 2008 per tonne on Tuesday.
Loaded-up shorts dragged the most-liquid SHFE September contract below the 20-day moving average, and exiting longs accelerated the declines in the afternoon, settling the contract 1.15% lower on the day at RMB 13,750 per tonne yesterday. The SHFE September contract rallied from earlier lows to close 0.22% lower at RMB 13,770 per tonne overnight. This suggested limited upward momentum in SHFE aluminium. The contract is expected to trade between RMB 13,700-13,800 per tonne today, with spot prices in a discount of RMB 20 per tonne to a premium of RMB 20 per tonne.
As the market again looked at fundamentals and LME aluminium also retreated, the contract is expected to hover weakly over the week.
