
The US dollar declined on Monday, June 15, amid mounting fears of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, while on Tuesday it rose on the back of a record rise in US retail sales. On Wednesday, the dollar continued to move higher and further expanded on Thursday, June 18.
Three-month LME aluminium regained losses from early session last night, as it rallied from a session low of US$ 1,564.5 per tonne and closed 0.73% higher on Monday, June 15, at US$ 1,587.5 per tonne. On June 16, it ended up 1.04% to stand at US$1,604 per tonne and further higher for the third consecutive day on June 17 to US$ 1,607.5 per tonne. On June 18, however, it ended the day 0.47% lower at US$1,600 per tonne.

Both LME aluminium cash (bid) and LME aluminium official settlement price began the week on Monday, June 15, with a drop of US$ 4 per tonne to stand at US$ 1546 per tonne. On Tuesday, the prices rose significantly by US$ 27.5 per tonne and clocked at US$ 1573.5 per tonne. The growth extended on Wednesday, June 17, to US$ 1577.50 per tonne, and further to US$ 1586.5 per tonne on Thursday, June 18. On Friday, however, the prices slipped by US$ 8.5 per tonne to come in at US$ 1578 per tonne. These data indicate that the LME aluminium prices showed an uptrend over the week by US$ 32 per tonne.
Along with the LME aluminium prices, 3-months bid price and 3-months offer price began and ended the week with declines to US$ 1570.5 per tonne and to US$ 1599 per tonne. In between, the prices recorded growths ranging between US$1573.5-1608 per tonne. The overall growth throughout the week had been US$ 28.5 per tonne. Dec 21 bid price and Dec 21 offer price started the week at US$ 1681 per tonne and grew to US$ 1702.5 per tonne at the week-end on June 19.
The LME aluminium opening stock stood at 1577000 tonnes on Monday, June 15, which on the next day rose to 1616550 tonnes. On June 17, the stock declined by 1575 tonnes to 1614975 tonnes, and then further down to 1610300 tonnes on June 18. On Friday, June 19, the decline in the opening stock continued to 1605625 tonnes.
SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
Benchmark aluminium price for SHFE displayed a sluggish trend this week ranging between US$ 1952 per tonne and US$ 1935 per tonne. After coming in at US$ 1952 per tonne on Monday, June 15, the SHFE price on Tuesday, June 16, dropped by US$ 5 per tonne to stand at US$ 1947 per tonne. On June 17, however, the price jumped to US$ 1960 per tonne, but again declined to US$ 1947 per tonne on Thursday, June 18, to US$ 1,944 per tonne. On Friday, June 19, the SHFE aluminium price stood at US$ 1,935 per tonne.
