LME aluminium dips across contracts and inventories; cash offer falls to $3,597/t

With comparison to the previous day's close, on May 6, the London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminium price dropped. The drop has been seen in the longer-dated contracts as well as at the inventory level.

On May 6, both the LME cash bid and cash offer dropped by USD 35.5 per tonne or 1 per cent, where the bid shifted from USD 3,631.5 per tonne to USD 3,596 per tonne and the offer from USD 3,632.5 per tonne to USD 3,597 per tonne.

Similarly, the LME 3-month bid and offer inched down by USD 17.5 per tonne or 0.5 per cent, where the bid moved to USD 3,544.5 per tonne from USD 3,562 per tonne and the offer to USD 3,545.5 per tonne from USD 3,563 per tonne.

The downward price movement continued in the LME December 27 bid and offer, but the impact is not that large owing to a difference of USD 2 per tonne or 0.1 per cent, where the bid changed to USD 3,140 per tonne from USD 3,142 per tonne and the offer at USD 3,145 per tonne from USD 3,147 per tonne.

LME's 3-month Asian Reference Price also dipped by USD 66.5 per tonne or 2 per cent, changing from USD 3,589 per tonne on May 5 to USD 3,522.5 per tonne on May 6.

At the inventory level, the opening stock was reduced by 2,027 tonnes or 0.6 per cent, changing from 364,752 tonnes to 362,725 tonnes. Concurrently, the live warrant changed from 331,925 tonnes to 331,725 tonnes, owing to a slight dip of 200 tonnes or 0.1 per cent.

The cancelled warrant on May 6 stood at 28,500 tonnes, down from 30,800 tonnes, reflecting a change of 2,300 tonnes or 7.5 per cent.

On May 6, the LME alumina platts price showed no change and is still at USD 308 per tonne.
