According to the data released by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organisation (IMIDRO), Iran's alumina powder output during the first eleven months of the current Iranian calendar (March 21, 2022-February 19, 2023) totalled 206,887 tonnes. That reflected a 2 per cent drop from 211,499 tonnes during the same period of the previous year.
Alumina is an important raw material for industrial applications, including construction materials, filling materials, abrasives, and catalysts. In plants and mechanical engineering, alumina ceramics are used for wear and corrosion protection.
Due to these vital alumina applications, the material plays a prime role in the Iranian economy. Hence, the country has implemented several policies as part of its continuous efforts to increase production capacity and improve quality.
Besides, Iran's vast bauxite reserves, the key raw material used in producing alumina, give the country a competitive advantage in the global alumina market.
However, factors like changes in market demand, fluctuations in global aluminium prices and supply chain disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused the decline in alumina powder production in the first eleven months of the Iranian calendar.
Nonetheless, Iran's alumina output is expected to grow with the global economic recovery and the government's investment in the industry. Iran's continuous efforts towards enhancing alumina production and the quality of the material indicate the country's commitment to the industry's advancement.
