Norsk Hydro, a leading aluminium and energy company, is reportedly investing EUR 180 million in constructing a new state-of-the-art aluminium recycling plant in Torija, Spain, in a bid to increase its low-carbon aluminium offerings in Europe and pave the path to green transition.
{alcircleadd}The new recycling plant will have an annual capacity of producing 120,000 tonnes of low-carbon recycled aluminium like aluminium extrusion ingots, primarily used in the transportation & automotive industry, building & construction, renewable energy installations, and consumer durable markets.
The facility should be able to recycle up to 70,000 tonnes of post-consumer scrap by applying process technologies developed at the recycling plants in Clervaux, Luxembourg, and Azuqueca, Spain. The facility will produce Hydro's premium product, 'Hydro CIRCAL', and certified low-carbon aluminium alloys with a CO2 footprint below 4 kg CO2 per kg.
Besides strengthening low-carbon aluminium production capacity, Hydro will boost regional employment through this new plant, creating 70 new jobs. The production of the plant is likely to commence in 2026.
Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President for Hydro Aluminium Metal, commented: "Worldwide demand for materials like aluminium is growing as we build the infrastructure needed for the green transition. To reach our climate goals, we must also change how these materials are produced. Key European industries, including the automotive and building & construction sectors, need access to responsibly produced materials with a low-carbon footprint. Hydro's new state-of-the-art aluminium recycling plant in Torija will be ideally positioned to help customers reach their sustainability goals by offering low-carbon aluminium with a high share of recycled post-consumer scrap."
Leveraging advanced sorting technology, Hydro creates advanced materials with the highest post-consumer recycled content, which helps the company substantially reduce energy use in production, while offering high-quality aluminium with equivalent metallurgical properties.
