Hydro Rein to develop two new solar projects in Sweden, aiming for sustainable industry in Nordic country

EDITED BY : DEBANJALI SENGUPTA 3MINS READ

According to a report on Tuesday, May 9, Hydro Rein has signed a contract with GreenGo Energy to purchase and develop two early-phase solar projects in Southern Sweden. The projects are in area SE4, with an estimated combined peak capacity of 118 MW. The land lease agreements have already been signed, and the construction is expected to begin in 2027.

As per the agreement, GreenGo Energy will develop the projects, while Hydro Rein will lead contractual setup and other services like structuring, route to market, construction and operations. Hydro will get 100 per cent ownership of the projects upon the completion of the acquisition.

The solar projects are estimated to generate 143 GWh of power. Site assessments of the projects are currently under process, and interconnection requests to the grid company are filed.

“We are proud to announce our first solar investment in Sweden together with our partner GreenGo Energy. This is another step towards diversifying Hydro Rein’s Nordic portfolio, both geographically and technologically. We already have a significant pipeline of wind projects in Sweden. With new green industrial developments planned in the region, we see great potential for combining wind and solar to decarbonize Swedish industry,” said Olivier Girardot, Head of Hydro Rein.

Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy, said: “This marks our first partnership agreement in the Swedish market, where we are rapidly expanding our footprint in an effort to support the Swedish renewable energy transition. With Hydro’s financial strength, experience in renewable investments and strong industrial presence in the Nordic power market, we have a great and scalable platform together.”

The solar market is booming in Sweden, with several projects under development. In 2020, one per cent of the total electricity generated in Sweden was from solar power. The Nordic country aims to meet 100 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2040.

Hydro Rein thinks these two new solar projects, expected to start production in 2028, will add a positive edge to its portfolio. Hydro Rein and GreenGo Energy have partnered for the second time with a common interest in developing renewable energy sources.

In December 2022, Hydro Rein announced a joint venture with Commerz Real to develop solar projects in Denmark. The construction of the projects is expected to start in 2024, and operations to begin in early 2026.

Hydro Rein, wholly owned by Norsk Hydro, is a leading provider of renewable energy solutions to help energy-intensive industries like aluminium to make sustainable production.
