HYDRO CIRCAL all set to meet the growing demand for verified low-carbon & circular materials across the US market

EDITED BY : 4MINS READ

In today's sustainability-driven world, the demand for eco-friendly materials is higher than ever, and this is where aluminium emerges as the leading character. Renowned for its strength, versatility, and infinite recyclability, aluminium is emerging as a game-changer in the push for greener solutions. But what truly sets it apart and how is innovation transforming its role in the modern world?

HYDRO CIRCAL all set to meet the growing demand for verified low-carbon & circular materials across the US market

Enter Hydro, the Norwegian aluminium giant, with its flagship initiative called the Hydro CIRCAL. Made with a minimum of 75 per cent post-consumer recycled aluminium scrap, Hydro CIRCAL is an eco-friendly choice that slashes carbon emissions compared to conventional aluminium production.

And this flagship product will now be widely available in the United States, making it a powerful solution for enhancing the environment across key industries such as construction, automotive, transport, and electronics without compromising on performance or aesthetics.  It is ready to meet the rising demand for verified low-carbon, circular materials across American industries.

"We are now able to bring American scrap back to life in new products through our advanced aluminium recycling facilities that we have adopted from our European business. Call it re-born in America. Aluminium can be recycled endlessly if sorted and treated correctly, and in this way is a very effective way to make use of resources we already have and cut emissions," stated Duncan Pitchford, Head of Commercial in Hydro's aluminium business in North America.

Hydro CIRCAL offers an ultra-low carbon footprint of less than 2 kg CO₂e per kg of aluminium, setting a new industry benchmark and achieving up to five times lower emissions than the global average. The product is already driving real-world impact across the US through strategic partnerships and projects that integrate sustainable aluminium into everyday applications including:

  • Third-party verified by DNV, Hydro's recycling facilities in Commerce, TX, Henderson, KY, and Cassopolis, MI, are all certified to produce Hydro CIRCAL.
  • Hydro's state-of-the-art Cassopolis facility was purpose-built to produce Hydro CIRCAL, transforming recovered materials such as automotive components and window frames into high-quality, sustainable aluminium.
  • Hydro CIRCAL played a key role in the restoration of Buckminster Fuller's iconic "Weatherbreak" geodesic dome at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The student-led project was featured during a live exhibit in July 2023, highlighting sustainable innovation in historic preservation.
  • In a landmark move, Vode Lighting became the first company in North America to incorporate Hydro CIRCAL into its products. By sourcing low-carbon recycled aluminium made in the US, the company is reducing emissions, strengthening its supply chain, and advancing a circular economy domestically.
  • Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive suppliers in Detroit are prototyping Hydro CIRCAL for use in battery housings and structural components, supporting automakers' efforts to reduce lifecycle emissions across electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
  • Hydro is actively collaborating with architecture schools, AIA chapters, and sustainability organisations across the US to promote awareness and adoption of low-carbon aluminium in the built environment.

Unlike many other low-carbon options, Hydro can supply over 120 million pounds directly from its US manufacturing facilities, empowering customers from furniture makers to automotive manufacturers with sustainable aluminium that helps achieve climate goals, enhance market differentiation, and strengthen supply chain resilience.

"We've invested heavily in R&D to ensure Hydro CIRCAL meets both the needed sustainability credentials as well as the highest standards of performance and reliability. From advanced surface treatments to load-bearing automotive applications, this material has been extensively tested across various industries. The result is a premium recycled aluminium that performs on par with—or even better than—new material, giving engineers and designers a responsible solution without compromise," added Pitchford.

By utilising large volumes of aluminium recovered from end-of-life products discarded in the US, Hydro CIRCAL conserves resources, reduces landfill waste, and supports the growth of a more circular and sustainable American manufacturing economy. With strong adoption already seen across Europe, the product has earned the trust of architects and designers for its low-carbon footprint and exceptional design flexibility. Every batch of Hydro CIRCAL is individually certified and fully traceable by independent third parties, ensuring complete transparency and accountability from scrap collection to final extrusion.
