In order to relocate a major part of its logistics operations to Fos-sur-Mer, Alteo has joined hands with HES Fos, a subsidiary of HES International BV. According to this arrangement, the latter will be responsible for the unloading of ships, storage of hydrated alumina and delivery to Alteo’s industrial plant in Gardanne.
{alcircleadd}Previously, these operations were centred in Marseille. However, with limited rail connections and a desire to cut down on road transport, Fos-sur-Mer offers a more practical solution. The relocation is aligned with both companies’ efforts and ambitions to reduce the environmental footprint. The relocation is completely in accordance with the company’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
In due course, HES Fos will convert a former clinker warehouse to store hydrated alumina and keep the supply chain running without any significant interruptions. Plans are already in the execution stage for purpose-built facilities, which are expected to be operational by 2029. Such new installations arrive with rail-loading capabilities, enabling a gradual shift from trucks to trains.
The deal defines a key developmental stage of HES Fos terminal, acquired in July 2025. It builds up the company’s ability to provide reliable, long-term logistics services to industrial customers and supports the growth of Fos-sur-Mer as a key industrial and transport hub.

Alteo sees the agreement as an opportunity to modernise its Gardanne operations. Improving the flow of materials and incorporating more rail transport, the company can significantly advance its decarbonisation ambitions.
The first vessel under this new arrangement is scheduled to dock at Fos-sur-Mer in June 2026.
