Hindalco Industries has entrusted power solutions provider GE with the task of modernising two steam turbines at the company’s Renusagar captive power plant in Uttar Pradesh. GE has made an announcement on Tuesday that it entered into an agreement with Hindalco to upgrade company’s generation equipment. For this modernisation, GE will be using its Powering Efficiency Center of Excellence.

Hindalco's Chief Operating Officer SN Jajoo commented: "our collaboration with GE on this project will demonstrate the feasibility of upgrading our existing steam turbines, which will allow us to increase the output, efficiency and performance of our existing fleet of plants."
GE targets to increase turbine output of up to 4 MW each. The modernisation by GE would increase the plant’s efficiency by up to six per cent and reduce the cost of power generation by around USD 15 million over five years.
Hindalco’s captive power plant at Renusagar is the first captive power plant (CPP) for aluminium industry in India. CPP along with a co-generation power unit supply power to the company’s smelter and other operations.

GE Power India Managing Director Ashok Ganesan said, "Reducing the cost of power generation is relevant for an aluminium company like Hindalco. The upgrades will not only improve the efficiency of the turbines but will also lower the cost of production and improve reliability and availability at the plant."
"The COE helps to apply a total plant hardware and software solution approach to boost the efficiency of the world's new and existing coal-fired power plants and to significantly reduce their emissions."
