German downstream aluminium exports fall 13% in H1 2026 but US enters top 5 with 228.1% import surge
Germany’s downstream aluminium export map underwent a noticeable shift in H1 2026. Shipments to the world fell, with most of Germany’s traditional European customers taking less aluminium downstream product. Yet, amid that broad retreat, one market moved in the opposite direction: the United States. German downstream aluminium exports to the world fell to 897,773.19 tonnes in H1 2026 from 1 million tonnes in H1 2025, a decline of 13 per cent year on year. The contrast was particularly sharp in the US market. American imports of German downstream aluminium reached 68,061.61 tonnes in H1 2026, up 228.1 per cent from just 20,743.62 tonnes in H1 2025. The increase of more than 47,000 tonnes was enough to push the US into Germany’s top 5 destinations for the first time. The export map is...
Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities
Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...

The Australian Aluminium Council urges full exemption from the RET
The Australian Aluminium Council has published a statement on the report by the Expert Panel for the Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme and its impact & benefits on the renewable energy sector, the manufacturing sector and Australian households. “We welcome the acknowledgement by the Review Panel that the RET impacts electricity prices for trade exposed businesses such as aluminium smelting and alumina refining – and that significant adjustments to the scheme are required to reduce its cost burden,” Miles Prosser, the Council’s Executive Director said. However, the Australian Aluminium Council says that the RET policy imposes extra costs on smelters which other major global competitors of the Australian aluminium industry do not need to pay. This is restricting their ability to compete...

Bauxite mining comes to halt at Hindalco mine
Bauxite mining by Aditya Birla owned Hindalco Industries has came to a grinding halt in the Mali Parbat area near Semiliguda in south Odisha's Koraput district with the district administration imposing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC. The prohibitory orders have been clamped in the area on August 21 in the wake of tussle between pro and anti-mining groups over mining of bauxite by Hindalco. The clash between the two groups had also occurred on January 10 this year. The supporters of the Mali Parvata Surakhya Samiti (MPSS), the tribal organisation spearheading the agitation, had damaged over 15 vehicles of the company that had entered the mines in the morning. "Since the situation is tense, we have imposed prohibitory orders in the area," said sub divisional police officer...

Colombia's Alumina sees higher aluminum sales on construction boom
Colombia's aluminum manufacturer Alumina expects to boost sales by 8% this year, on rising demand from the country's construction industry. Alumina, which handles 50% of Colombian aluminum sales, is cutting exports to the US, South America and Central America to focus 70% of its business on the local construction market, CEO Carlos Echeverri said. Aluminum imports from China, Mexico and Ecuador account for 30%, while the remaining 20% comes from other local companies. "Importers are very aggressive and profit margins are minimal," Echeverri told local newspaper Portafolio. "Exports can generate growth, but only through manufactured products that create added value." Alumina saw sales drop 4.2% to 230bn pesos (US$119mn) last year, of which US$20mn came from exports, due to slumping...
