AL Circle Analysis: Bauxite developments, alumina trade & primary aluminium market dynamics across Australia, Guinea, US & India
The aluminium industry is entering another phase of supply-chain repositioning. Across bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium, companies are investing in new resources, consolidating strategic assets and expanding processing capacity, while governments are increasingly treating domestic supply as a strategic priority. The latest developments from Australia, Guyana, Guinea, Indonesia, the US and India point to a market where resource security, processing location and control over supply chains are becoming as important as production growth. At the same time, new trading mechanisms and changing investment patterns are beginning to influence how aluminium and its raw materials reach the market. Bauxite supply expands, but securing the right tonnes is becoming harder In Western Australia, VBX...
China's 22.87 Mt extrusion market faces a structural shift as 317 GW solar growth counters weak construction demand
The global aluminium extrusion landscape is undergoing a structural transition driven by industrial decarbonisation, global electrification, and the rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure. Historically anchored by civil engineering and residential real estate, demand for extruded aluminium profiles in China, the world’s dominant manufacturing hub, is decoupling from traditional property sectors. Persistent structural weakness in China’s domestic construction market has slowed the consumption of conventional architectural profiles such as window frames, door sections, and curtain walls. Conversely, advanced industrial applications, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) racking, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power grid modernisation, and electric vehicles (EVs), have...

Rio Tinto has invested $4.8 billion for the modernization of its Kitimat aluminium smelter in British Columbia increasing its production capacity by 48% to around 420,000 tons/year. The modernization also allow 80% of Rio’s smelters to be in the first quartile backed by long-life, low-cost hydropower. “Our aluminium division has been working hard on productivity and cost for a number of years, delivering some low-cost creep tonnes...

Gulf Extrusions sees demand for aluminium products rising in Egypt
The United Arab Emirates's Gulf Extrusions, one of the largest aluminium product makers in the Gulf, said on Wednesday it would set up a commercial office in Egypt before the end of the year to take advantage of a growing market boosted by housing sector demand. The firm, part of the Al Ghurair Group, said it could see the market for extruded aluminium products in Egypt rising from 85,000 tonnes a year to around 300,000 tonnes in coming years, largely because of the need to build one million housing units a year there until 2020. "There will be a big leap and it will drive the demand for extruded aluminium products in the region as well," general manager Modar al-Mekdad told Reuters on the sidelines of the CRU Aluminium Conference in Dubai. "We already sell our products there through our...

Top aluminium producers underline the importance of aluminium scrap utilization
The nonferrous market in Europe may be finding some solid footing, which could be good news for the overall health of most nonferrous metals markets there. One sticking point continues to be China, which continues to send mixed signals on its economy. For aluminium, after a modest price rally, the metal has fallen quite significantly. Reflecting the challenges for European handlers of aluminium has been the drop in aluminium premiums. Various reports note that aluminium premiums in Europe have fallen by around 42% this year from last year’s level. Despite some difficulties, there does appear to be improved demand in a number of countries, with a sense that buying could start to strengthen later this year. Adding the positive signals, the European aluminium producer Norsk Hydro completed...

Novelis reports fiscal year 2015 results
Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, today reported net income of $148 million for fiscal year 2015, a 42 percent increase from the $104 million reported in fiscal 2014. Adjusted EBITDA grew two percent to $902 million in fiscal 2015 compared to the $885 million reported in fiscal 2014. The increase was primarily driven by higher shipments, favorable product mix due to a strategic shift to grow automotive shipments and cost benefits from using a higher percentage of recycled metal inputs. Partially offsetting these gains were higher costs associated with the start-up and support of new capacity, lower pricing in some Asian markets, as well as unfavorable foreign...
