AL Circle Analysis: Bauxite developments, alumina trade & primary aluminium market dynamics across Australia, Guinea, US & India
The aluminium industry is entering another phase of supply-chain repositioning. Across bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium, companies are investing in new resources, consolidating strategic assets and expanding processing capacity, while governments are increasingly treating domestic supply as a strategic priority. The latest developments from Australia, Guyana, Guinea, Indonesia, the US and India point to a market where resource security, processing location and control over supply chains are becoming as important as production growth. At the same time, new trading mechanisms and changing investment patterns are beginning to influence how aluminium and its raw materials reach the market. Bauxite supply expands, but securing the right tonnes is becoming harder In Western Australia, VBX...
China's 22.87 Mt extrusion market faces a structural shift as 317 GW solar growth counters weak construction demand
The global aluminium extrusion landscape is undergoing a structural transition driven by industrial decarbonisation, global electrification, and the rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure. Historically anchored by civil engineering and residential real estate, demand for extruded aluminium profiles in China, the world’s dominant manufacturing hub, is decoupling from traditional property sectors. Persistent structural weakness in China’s domestic construction market has slowed the consumption of conventional architectural profiles such as window frames, door sections, and curtain walls. Conversely, advanced industrial applications, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) racking, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power grid modernisation, and electric vehicles (EVs), have...

Boyne Smelters begins aluminium can recycling
In time for National Recycling Week (9-15 November), Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL) is now operating Queensland's only and Australia's largest aluminium can recycling facility after a successful pilot proved the potential of the value-add processing concept earlier this year. The smelter is now recycling around 13 million aluminium cans a month, which will add 2,400 tonnes of aluminium to its production annually. In 2011, BSL invested in a partnership with Inalco for an onsite processing plant to recycle dross, cell bottoms, and scrap aluminium. Prior to 2011, all dross was sent offsite for processing. But it wasn't until Australia's largest remaining aluminium recycling plant closed last year, resulting in the majority of aluminium cans being sent offshore for processing, that BSL staff...

One aluminium producer seeks Q1 premium of $120/T from Japan buyers
An aluminium producer has offered Japanese buyers a premium of $120 per tonne for January-March primary metal shipments, up 33 percent from the previous quarter, said sources close to industry bodies asscoiated with pricing of metals. Japan is Asia's biggest importer of the metal and the premiums for primary metal shipments it agrees to pay each quarter over the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price set the benchmark for the region. For the October-December quarter, Japanese buyers mostly agreed to pay a premium of $90 per tonne PREM-ALUM-JP, down 10 percent from the prior quarter. The latest quarterly pricing negotiations began this week between Japanese buyers and miners including Rio Tinto Ltd, Alcoa Inc and South32 Ltd, and are expected to continue next month.

LME aluminium to extend upward momentum this week
LME aluminium will extend upward momentum into next week, SMM expects. SHFE aluminium will rise further to 10,400-10,800 yuan per tonne on more short-covering triggered by output out news. And this will push LME aluminium up to 1,500-1,550 per tonne. A firm US dollar amid high expectations for US rate hike this year will pressure LME aluminium at highs, though. A firm US dollar amid high expectations for US rate hike this year and concerns over China economic slowdown all bode ill for LME aluminium. In China’s spot market, despite rising SHFE aluminium, the fact that forward-month SHFE aluminium contract underperform near-month contracts and growing wait-and-see sentiment among processors will check spot discounts in check around 100 yuan per tonne over SHFE front-month contract.

Beijing mulls bailout for aluminium industry
China's state stockpiler is considering buying more than 1.0 million tonnes of aluminium from local smelters, sources said, an initial sign that Beijing could agree to the first major bailout in its embattled metals industry since 2009. News that the central government might scoop up a sizeable portion of domestic inventory in a bid to shore up struggling smelters stunned some traders, who said the strategy to increase state reserves would offer only short-term support to prices as the demand would be artificial. Shifting metal into storage would do little to get rid of the structural overcapacity that has pushed international prices to decade lows and helped create global oversupply, the traders said. Estimates on the world glut range between 8 million and 12 million tonnes. The...

Noranda ekes out profit despite higher bauxite levy
Noranda Bauxite Limited was able to eke out US$500,000 (J$60 million) of operating profit during the three months to September. The mining company generated US$33.5 million in sales during the quarter, or US$2.7 million higher revenue than year-earlier levels. This was primarily as a result of an 18 per cent increase in external sales prices and a five per cent rise in external shipment volume. Also, savings from the expansion of its port in Discovery Bay, St Ann, helped reduced cost, albeit not by as much as the reduction it saw in fuel expenses. "Bauxite results reflect US$3.5 million lower fuel costs, a US$1-million currency benefit and lower demurrage fees," said the latest financial statements filed by Noranda to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. This was offset by an...

The combined company would have 60 percent of the beverage can market in North America, 69 percent in Europe and 74 percent in Brazil, according to Morningstar analysts. Ball is prepared to divest four factories in Germany, three in the UK, one each in Spain, France, the Netherlands and Austria, the sources said on Wednesday. Nine of the plants make cans and...

Demand outpaces supply of high-end aluminum rolling material products
With the recovery of global economy, aluminium alloy plate capacity gap in some countries continues to enlarge, gradually forming a very large scale of import demand. From the current market, China’s demand for high-end aluminum rolling material products has a very big market gap. The consumption of global high-end aluminum rolling material products accounts for 35% of the total, but only 12% of the proportion of high-end products. China is far lower than the global average. At present, the country rely mainly on imports for more than 600000 tons of high-end aluminum rolling material products, each year. Meanwhile, China’s companies are able to grasp these high-end production technology, as long as the enterprises keep the leading level in facilities, have technical support in advanced...
