Fact-finding committee blames alumina plant, authorities for red sludge disaster

The red sludge spill that hit three West Hungarian towns in October 2010 can be attributed to the negligence of alumina factory Mal whose reservoir burst in the first place, and to the authorities in the second, the head of the parliamentary fact-finding committee told Parliament on Tuesday.

The disaster was caused by a series of errors and the owner’s irresponsible and negligent approach, Lajos Kepli said.

On October 4, 2010 about a million cubic metres of caustic liquid and half a million cubic metres of toxic red sludge escaped from the reservoir, flooding nearby Kolontar, Devecser and Somlovasarhely.

The toxic spill killed ten people, injured nearly 300, destroyed hundreds of buildings, wiped out all life in two small rivers, polluted over 1000 hectares of land and caused damages of tens of billions of forints.

Kepli, an MP of the radical nationalist Jobbik, called it absurd that the reservoir had never been licensed from the static point of view, and its content had not been classified as hazardous material.

He also blamed the previous governments for their failure to adopt EU directives which could have prevented the disaster.

State Secretary of the Interior Andras Tallai said that the government agreed with key conclusions of the committee.
