12 bungalows at Killymoon Crescent in Cookstown, Northern Ireland have been refurbished by the Housing Executive at a cost of £300,000. The residents are now looking forward to a more convenient and comfortable winter after the renovation. The prefabricated aluminium bungalows were built in 1950. The buildings have been transformed with what is known as a ‘thermal comfort scheme’. These renovations are expected to add the value for money and thermal efficiency of the aluminium bungalows. Since the buildings were old, the thermal comfort scheme is designed to improve the condition of the bungalows to match up to the current building standards and to meet the needs of existing tenants and future applicants. The roofs, external doors and walls, windows, guttering and down pipes of the 12...

Local breweries in the US that rely heavily on aluminium cans are starting to feel the pinch of import tariffs on aluminium products imported from Canada. Winnipeg is home to over 20 different local beer breweries that now have no other choice than to pay the tariff in order to continue producing beer. “Everything is expensive enough as it is – why are we adding more expenses to everything?” said Tyler Birch, co-owner of Barn Hammer Brewing. Birch started a beer canning company in the beginning of 2018, Mammoth Mobile Canning, which cans beer for five local breweries in Winnipeg including his own. In his last shipment of aluminium beer cans, 160,000 cans costed him an average of 20 cents per can. With the tariffs and mark-ups from retailers, he is expecting a 20% increase, adding over...

The US automotive industry pleaded President Donald Trump on Thursday, July 19, to reject higher tariffs on vehicle imports, saying that these additional tariffs could cripple domestic manufacturing and cause job loss. The pleas came followed by the European Union’s announcement of preparing a list of retaliatory measures in response to possible US tariffs on foreign vehicles. In May, the Trump administration called for an investigation into auto imports that could lead to tariffs of up to 25 per cent on foreign vehicles and parts. Economists warn these automobile tariffs, on top of aluminium and steel tariffs along with heavy retaliation from US trading partners could harm the global economy. Former Missouri governor Matt Blunt, head of the American Automotive Policy Council that...

Boeing is now looking at finding "alternative solutions" to trade disputes while both the US and China are imposing tariffs on each other's goods, said Mr Muilenburg.Speaking ahead of this week's...

Last week, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on several products manufactured in the United States, including a 10 percent tariff on aluminum doors, door thresholds and windows. These tariffs were issued in response to the tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed by the United States, which were recently expanded to include Canada and Mexico. Canada has stated that these tariffs will remain in effect until the U.S. rescinds its tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. “These actions will only lead to additional price increases in the residential and commercial building markets in both countries, and will hinder progress in the renegotiation of NAFTA and in resolving the softwood lumber dispute,” says Michael O’Brien, CEO, Window and Door Manufacturers Association. According to the Department...

Last year, 1,001,520 cars rolled off assembly lines in Slovakia and exports were worth 3.7 billion euros. “The ratio of overseas car exports to Slovakia’s GDP is significantly the highest among all countries of the EU, at up to 1.7 per cent,” said the Slovak Institute for Financial Policy (IFP) in a study. According to IMF, the automotive tariffs, if come into effect, could hard-hit Slovakia approximately 90 million euros. Martin Vlachynsky, an...

As soon as China’s 25 per cent tariff on US-made cars came into effect on Friday, July 6, German luxury automaker BMW said it would not be able to completely absorb the new tariff and thus, would raise prices on the vehicles it makes in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This posed a tough choice for automakers whether they...
