On July 13, Emirates Global Aluminium and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K-Line Group) signed an agreement to collaborate on research and pilot projects to decarbonize bulk cargo shipping. The K-Line Group is one of the largest shipping groups in the world.

To accommodate EGA's bulk cargo shipping routes in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and the Indian Ocean, the partnership will help to concentrate on the creation and use of novel marine decarbonisation technologies.
“Decarbonisation is an essential challenge for the shipping industry to meet the expectations of our customers and global society. This cooperation with EGA, which has been one of our most important customers for decades, will enable us to jointly make progress towards net zero for both our companies. It will also enable us to pioneer new approaches for the shipping industry as a whole,” said Yukikazu MYOCHIN, the President & CEO of K-Line Group.
Kite systems, alternative fuels, and CO2 collection technology are likely to be solutions. Technical and practical barriers to their wider adoption still exist for all of these technologies today, ranging from technology immaturity to a lack of infrastructure for support.

According to the International Maritime Organization, roughly 3 per cent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to shipping. A percentage of the emissions produced in the supply chain of EGA, or scope 3 emissions, are caused by shipping.
EGA will focus on trial projects along its K-Line shipping routes, while K-Line Group will take the lead in research into decarbonisation potential. Under long-term Contracts of Affreightment, K-Line Group ships around five million tonnes of EGA's bauxite annually from the Republic of Guinea to the UAE and approximately 1.5 million tonnes of alumina annually from Australia to the UAE.
“Economy-wide decarbonisation will require cooperation between industries, and we are pleased to work with “K” Line Group on this important global challenge. Our long-term relationship with “K” Line Group provides an ideal platform to develop and test ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. For EGA, our goal is to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions not just from our own operations but also from activities in our supply chain. Improving the fuel efficiency of shipping could also reduce our shipping costs,” said Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA.
