Century Aluminum gets a production boost as Iceland smelter restarts, lifting Q3 performance

Century Aluminum Company reported stronger financial results for the third quarter of 2026, as the restart of Line 2 at its Grundartangi facility in Iceland helped increase aluminium shipments, net sales and profitability. The production recovery, combined with favourable realised metal prices, supported a rise in net income to USD 302.6 million, compared with USD 249.3 million in the second quarter. The company's net sales reached USD 961.2 million during the quarter ended September 30, 2026, marking a sequential increase of USD 209.1 million. Aluminium shipments also climbed to 173,483 tonnes from 130,632 tonnes in the preceding quarter, reflecting the contribution of Line 2 returning to near-full production during the reporting period. The improvement in earnings was primarily driven...

Downstream aluminium producers' operating rates increased slightly this week, and the divergence between sectors continues

This week, the operating rate of major aluminium processors in China remained stable with a slight overall rebound, rising 0.1 per cent month-on-month. Performance was mixed across sectors, as the industry continues a moderate recovery trend. The operating rate for primary aluminium alloys climbed 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 per cent, driven by improved order volume and year-end momentum from automakers to meet their annual targets, with a positive short-term outlook. The operating rate for aluminium wire and cable rose 0.4 percentage points to 64.8 per cent, supported by recovering photovoltaic demand and restored margins, although the sustainability of the upward trend remains to be seen. The operating rate for secondary aluminium rebounded 0.6 percentage points to 53.9 per cent, with...

Demand for automotive aluminum to double over next 10 years

According to a report from Automotive Discovery, the demand for automotive aluminum will double over the next 10 years due to weight reduction plans by manufacturers such as General Motors, Ford, Nissan, Audi, BMW and Jaguar Land Rover. These auto manufacturers plan to remove hundreds of pounds from future vehicle models in order to meet stricter fuel economy standards. The report also stated that the weight reduction can not only maintain but improve the safety of these vehicles since aluminum absorbs twice the energy of steel and is designed to fold predictably in a crash while offering huge weight reduction potential with strength retention.

Since the beginning of the school year, students at Swenson Early Childhood Education Center, Trojan Elementary School and Osawatomie High School have been collecting aluminum tabs of all shapes and sizes. Whether they be from soda cans, juice lids or even soup cans, students snatched them up and threw them all together. When the dust settled and the final count came in, students had collected well over 260 pounds of tabs. While students at Swenson raked in 102 pounds, Trojan students brought in 166 pounds; a final weight was not available for the tabs collected at OHS.

CRU 16th World Aluminium Conference To Be Held On 13-15 June In Barcelona, Spain

CRU's World Aluminium Conference provides a complete assessment of the aluminium supply chain, with unrivalled global analysis and networking. There is a great deal of positive sentiment in the aluminium industry at the moment. Demand performance in 2010 and growth projections for 2011 and 2012 are all higher than previous estimates. Favourable power contracts and high LME prices are underpinning confidence and there have been fewer smelter closures and more smelter re-starts than previously expected. Nonetheless, in spite of the positive outlook there are a number of challenges and uncertainties. The disconnect between inventory and price, the implications posed by developments in the Middle East, and macroeconomic policy in Europe and North America are all high on the agenda. CRU's...

From Field to Family Safety, Aluminum Gun Cases are Preferred by Sportsmen

Vancouver, BC, Canada, May 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- MEZZI, world renowned aluminum case manufacturer, is finding that sportsmen and gun owners have been seeking out various models in their line of aluminum gun cases for a variety of reasons, including a very important one - family safety. "Gun owners have always been protective over their firearms," explains MEZZI President, David Mezzi, "but not everyone has the space or finances for expensive vault-style gun safes, and safes don't protect the guns during transport to the range or hunting grounds. So sportsmen are looking for a solution that will answer all their concerns and provide security, safety and make transport easy. And what they have found is the aluminum gun case." "While there has been no shortage of case materials available to...

Holden to dress Commodore in aluminium

HOLDEN will become the first Australian car manufacturer to employ mass-produced aluminium body panels – most likely the bonnet and boot – to snip the fuel consumption of its next-generation VF Commodore due in 2014. The “light-weighting” exercise, plus a switch to electric-powered steering and new efforts to improve the aerodynamics of the top-selling Australian car, are expected to cut Commodore’s thirst by about seven per cent at the cost of at least $160 million. A quarter of that bill – $39.8 million – will be paid by the federal government from its now defunct Green Car Innovation Fund, which was killed off early this year – a victim of spending cuts in the wake of the Queensland floods. GM Holden applied for the grant before Canberra brought down the boom on the fund, becoming one...

Venezuelan government not interested in reviving aluminum companies - Mr Emilio Campos

BNamericas cited Mr Emilio Campos union general secretary of Sutracarbonorca as saying that the Venezuelan government is not interested in taking action to revive aluminum sector companies. Mr Campos said that small and large scale companies as well as Venezuelan investors have put forward proposals to revive the sector but the government doesn't seem to be interested in these solutions. Workers at state owned carbon anodes firm Carbonorca proposed that Swiss company Glencore which buys aluminum from the government help out by looking for alternative markets to sell its products. Currently, state reducer Alcasa is Carbonorca's only customer. The aluminum sector's small scale processing plants have also called on the government to form a strategic partnership to give the metal more added...

Truck racing team benefits from aluminium wheels

In his inaugural European season, ten-times winner of the British Truck Racing Championship Stuart Oliver says he will be benefitting from forged aluminium vehicle wheels, from xlite. The wheels are 40% lighter than the standard steel equivalent and five times stronger, meaning increased impact resistance. Other claimed benefits include unique safety features and reduced vibration. Forged aluminium gives improved heat dissipation, meaning longer wear on surrounding parts, plus less water needs to be carried for the coolant system – making the race truck lighter at the start line. Oliver, who will be leading the charge for the 2011 FIA European Truck Race Drivers Cup with Team Allgäuer, used the wheel during his last three successful seasons and has stayed with the brand for its improved...

Taiwan makers to raise aluminum capacitors prices by 10% in May-June

Taiwan-based makers of aluminum electrolytic capacitors plans to raise their quotes by 10% on average in May-June as their profits have been eroded by rising aluminum foil prices, according to industry sources. Taiwan Chinsan Electronic Industrial reported that its gross margin dropped to 20.43% in the first quarter compared to 26.7% a year earlier due to increased cost of aluminum foils. However, Chinsan revealed current orders for its aluminum capacitors, including high-end polymer and metalized polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) models, have outpaced its capacity. The company plans to jack up its capacity for PEN capacitors to three million units a month from the current level of two million units soon and also to ramp up the capacity of solid capacitors at its plant in Thailand to 50...

Move Heavy Furniture Across Carpet Easily With Aluminium Foil

Unless you’re the Incredible Hulk, moving heavy furniture across carpet is a difficult, back-straining process. Make the process a little easier with a bit of aluminium foil. While you can always grab furniture sliders to move that big furniture, a bit of aluminium foil should help serve the same purpose. Just stick it under the furniture’s legs (shiny side up; the dull side is actually more slippery) and it should drag across the carpet much easier. It’ll still be heavy, of course, but you won’t have as much trouble getting it started, and it won’t “jump” around as much when you drag it. Hit the link to see a ton of other clever aluminium foil uses.
