This week, the operating rate of major aluminium processors in China remained stable with a slight overall rebound, rising 0.1 per cent month-on-month. Performance was mixed across sectors, as the industry continues a moderate recovery trend. The operating rate for primary aluminium alloys climbed 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 per cent, driven by improved order volume and year-end momentum from automakers to meet their annual targets, with a positive short-term outlook. The operating rate for aluminium wire and cable rose 0.4 percentage points to 64.8 per cent, supported by recovering photovoltaic demand and restored margins, although the sustainability of the upward trend remains to be seen. The operating rate for secondary aluminium rebounded 0.6 percentage points to 53.9 per cent, with...
Novelis reported a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in adjusted EBITDA to USD 508 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, while rolled product shipments declined 2 per cent to 919,000 tonnes. Net sales rose 25 per cent to USD 5.9 billion from USD 4.7 billion in the corresponding quarter last year, mainly due to higher average aluminium prices. Higher shipments of beverage packaging and aerospace products were partly offset by lower volumes in automotive and speciality products. Net income attributable to Novelis' common shareholders increased 29 per cent to USD 210 million, compared with USD 163 million a year earlier. Excluding special items, net income also rose 29 per cent to USD 146 million. Explore further insights and forecasts for the aluminium flat rolled products...

Alustyle and Intertego, two flexible series of BOPLA aluminium profile enclosures have been release by Rubin Group . These aluminium enclosures are excellent applications for all sizes in measurement technology, mechanical engineering and automobile manufacture sectors. Both series of aluminium enclosures stand out thanks to their standardised clear ap-pearance, identical concept of colours and accessories, and being highly identifiable adds to high levels of recognition on the market. Alustyle is primarily used for applications in the small and medium-sized segments, Intertego is often used to house products with larger dimensions and 19" technology. Both series of enclosures offer multiple opportunities for processing and servicing, all of which can be carried out in BOPLA's factory.

Almost 300 tons of concrete and aluminum donated by Gulf Power could soon be teeming with sea life. The electric utility is providing the retired materials to help make an artificial reef about two miles south of Pensacola Beach in 60 feet of water near the Three Barges site. The Escambia County Marine Recreational Committee will sink the materials some time next year. The 66 concrete sections — covers for underground electrical equipment — weigh about 9,000 pounds each and will serve as a foundation for the public reef, which will include concrete culverts from the county. “Concrete, steel and aluminum are great for reef-building — and this material would have otherwise been discarded,” Gulf Power Spokesman Jeff Rogers said. “The fish and sea life love this stuff; it will be a boon to...

Brian Sylcott's last laptop computer developed a crack after being toted around for everyday use, and a corner of the plastic casing came off. He replaced it with an Apple MacBook Pro with a solid aluminum exterior. "I thought this might be a little sturdier," the Carnegie Mellon University graduate student said, and more than two years of use has proven him right. "I may have banged it up a little or walked into something while I was carrying it. There are a couple dents and some scratches on the bottom," said Sylcott, 26, of Brookline, who is working toward a doctorate in mechanical engineering. "Other than that, it's fine." Aluminum has been taking on a bigger role in electronics products, such as computers, TVs and cell phones as designers try to use more environmentally friendly...

Growth in the European aluminium foil sector is expected this year, with first quarter 2011 reports showing an increase in production by 1.3 per cent to 214,400 tonnes compared with the same quarter last year. Thicker aluminium foil gauges, used mainly for the manufacture of semi-rigid foil trays and technical applications, increased by six per cent, while thinner gauges used mainly in flexible packaging and household foil fell slightly by 0.7 per cent, according to the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA). Exports outside the EAFA region remained stable. In 2010, the European aluminium foil sector grew an overall 10.6 per cent to 850,300 tonnes. EAFA's Executive Director, Stefan Glimm, said he was confident that the sector would remain strong in 2011 due to the successful marketing...

Buildings that eat smog? Alcoa, a maker of aluminum products, introduced an architectural panel Thursday that it says not only cleans itself but also the air around it. The aluminum panel has a titanium dioxide coating that, when combined with sunlight, acts as a catalyst to break down pollutants such as smog into harmless matter that rain washes away. "It could have a significant impact" if enough buildings use the product, says Craig Belnap, president of Alcoa Architectural Products. The company says 10,000 square feet of its panels have the air-cleansing power of about 80 trees.

Dubai: Oman Aluminium Rolling Company has awarded a $385 million (Dh1,413 million) contract to an Italian company to build a production plant with a 160,000 tonne capacity. Fata EPC, a Turin-based engineering, procurement and construction company, is expecting production at the aluminium rolling plant to start August 2013. Construction at its peak will create to about 1,200 jobs in the local economy. At full production, the plant will generate 275 direct jobs. Fata EPC, a division of Finmeccanica, is now focusing on the GCC.

Automakers are highlighting plans to reduce weight in North American vehicles efficiently and safely to meet stricter fuel economy standards. Making even greater use of high-strength, low weight materials, like aluminum, to meet the stricter government regulations allows automakers to manufacture lighter vehicles that produce fewer emissions and need less fuel or battery power to operate. Several manufacturers, including GM, Ford, Nissan, Audi, BMW and Jaguar Land Rover, have all revealed plans to remove hundreds of pounds of weight from future models. With weight reduction plans already in motion, the aluminum industry is predicting demand for automotive aluminum to double in the next decade.

The Italian company FATA, a division of international company Finmeccanica, was awarded a contract worth USD 300 million with Oman Aluminium Rolling Company, and so has been selected as a leader for the management of engineering projects and the organization of procurement and construction, yesterday during the Aluminum Dubai Exhibition . This strategically important project will be located in Sohar, north of Muscat. Anthony Tropeano, CEO of FATA, said, "The estimated cost of the project is USD385 million, and the project will provide 275 direct jobs at full production." The project will also generate many other jobs required to support the operation of the plant. And under an Interim Agreement, FATA has began the engineering works in January 2011.

Alcoa yesterday announced it has exceed its 2020 carbon footprint goal, the findings of which were released in its 2010 Sustainability Report. Gulf News reported that the GCC railway project has the region's Aluminum extrusion companies rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of the lucrative business potentially coming their way, given the relatively infant downstream industry in the Gulf. Industry insiders said that the main body of train wagons and stations is made of Aluminum a single train compartment is made of 7 tonnes of Aluminum. Mr Madar Al Mekdad GM of Gulf Extrusions said that "We will be involved with GCC rail and dealing with the train manufacturers. They should insist on using local companies. Political unrest in the region, a natural disaster in Japan and construction sector weakness in Dubai have taken their toll on the Gulf's Aluminum industry. Demand for Aluminum extrusions will grow but only 2% to 3% per...

Aluminium is a highly versatile, lightweight and strong material and can be worked using a variety of metalworking techniques. An increasing number of architectural projects involve the specification of worked aluminium. To assist with this process and to ensure the product realisation meets your expectation we would like to share with you some important design considerations. Bespoke working involves making items to specifier requirement on a one-off type basis. Job specific - quantities, sizes, shapes, radii, fixing details etc., are all incorporated into the finished item. With each unique specification there is a first time for everything. It is always possible that unexpected developments can arise. Practical consideration in terms of material performance and / or machine...
