Downstream aluminium producers' operating rates increased slightly this week, and the divergence between sectors continues

This week, the operating rate of major aluminium processors in China remained stable with a slight overall rebound, rising 0.1 per cent month-on-month. Performance was mixed across sectors, as the industry continues a moderate recovery trend. The operating rate for primary aluminium alloys climbed 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 per cent, driven by improved order volume and year-end momentum from automakers to meet their annual targets, with a positive short-term outlook. The operating rate for aluminium wire and cable rose 0.4 percentage points to 64.8 per cent, supported by recovering photovoltaic demand and restored margins, although the sustainability of the upward trend remains to be seen. The operating rate for secondary aluminium rebounded 0.6 percentage points to 53.9 per cent, with...

Aero Aluminum Alloy To Compete With Composites, Due In Cars?

Aero Aluminum Alloy To Compete With Composites, Due In Cars?

Low weight is the golden goose of automotive technology. Everyone wants it because it brings about improvements in virtually all areas - performance, economy, handling - but engineering a car with lower weight than the one that preceeded it is difficult to do. Customers want safer, quieter and better equipped cars. This all adds weight, so carmakers searching reductions in weight often have to turn to lighter - and more expensive - materials such as aluminum, carbon fiber, titanium, magnesium and more. The aviation industry has the same goals and many weight saving technologies originally stem from research into aircraft design. The latest material, developed by aluminum producer Alcoa, is aluminum lithium alloy. Alcoa claims the new alloy could save up to 10 percent on the weight of a...

Boeing Eyes Aluminum Hedging Amid Market Volatility

Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote) may decide within the next year to begin hedging aluminum prices on the London Metals Exchange (LME) in order to reduce volatility in its costs, a senior executive said on Friday. If initiated, the company intends to use the new hedging program on its long-term agreements, John Byrne, an executive with the company's commercial airplanes unit, told Reuters. "Given the volatility, it's hard to tie down firm fixed pricing, so we have been looking at what are the different options to bring a little bit more stability into that pricing component ... hedging the LME was one of the options we have been studying," he said. "Within the next year was probably a reasonable time frame that we might use that option." Boeing's consideration of hedging was triggered by a sharp...

Aero aluminum still flying strong - Alcoa

Worldal reported that the choice of non metallic composites on the latest crop of jumbo jets doesn’t spell the loss of aluminum’s dominant role in commercial aircraft production. According to an Alcoa Inc executive, the choice of non metallic composites on the latest crop of jumbo jets doesn’t spell the loss of aluminum’s dominant role in commercial aircraft production. Mr Tony Morales global marketing director of aerospace aluminum at Pittsburgh based Alcoa Inc said that recent inroads by composites might have led to premature judgments about aluminum obsolescence. Alcoa has absolutely no quarrel with Boeing Company’s decision to use non metallic composites for a record 50% of the weight of its 787 Dreamliner which resulted in aluminum accounting for an uncharacteristically low 20%.

There is also the project wherein Jaguar is working on the C-X75 Concept. Then there are reports that the company would be using a highly advanced aluminum body for this SUV/crossover, which will be fuel-efficient being extremely lightweight on its own. However, it would be a four years wait that one would have to undergo for this model. The total weight of the aluminium body would be 200-300 kg or 441-661 lbs lighter than that of a car body with a conventional steel body. The...
