Novelis reported a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in adjusted EBITDA to USD 508 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, while rolled product shipments declined 2 per cent to 919,000 tonnes. Net sales rose 25 per cent to USD 5.9 billion from USD 4.7 billion in the corresponding quarter last year, mainly due to higher average aluminium prices. Higher shipments of beverage packaging and aerospace products were partly offset by lower volumes in automotive and speciality products. Net income attributable to Novelis' common shareholders increased 29 per cent to USD 210 million, compared with USD 163 million a year earlier. Taiwan-based solar cell conductive paste maker Giga Solar has reported EPS of NT$14.86 (US$0.51) for first-half 2011. Silver aluminum paste accounted for 30% of total revenues and Giga Solar expects the figure to increase to 50%. Silver conductive paste will be the main focus of research and development in second half of 2011, Giga Solar said. Wen-Jui Huang, general manager of Giga Solar, indicated that on a unit base the revenues from silver aluminum paste is 20 times the revenues from aluminum paste. But the amount of silver aluminum paste used on the same amount of solar cells is only one fifteenth of aluminum paste used. Therefore, the profitability of the two pastes is very similar. (NMIC) recently introduced the first commercial device-level solution for dissipating the heat generated by high-density semiconductor devices such as gallium nitride (GaN) RF power transistors. When used as a heat spreader integrated with a device, NMIC's new aluminum diamond metal matrix composites (MMCs), have demonstrated their ability to reduce device junction temperatures by up to 25%, allowing the devices to generate their full power output at their highest efficiency and potentially extend their operating life. Indian group Hindalco has ordered an aluminium extrusion line from Reed Machinery Ltd in association with Alteco, Austria and Qualiteam International, The Netherlands. The line is presently installed at the Magoula works of ETEM Light Metal Co. in Athens, Greece. Dismantling and removal to India will commence shortly. Re-installation is anticipated for mid 2012. The line will be installed either at Hindalco’s Renukoot or Kerala works.

Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products was up 4.9% to a total of 7.386 billion lb in the same period. Year-to-date, apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totaled an estimated 8.683 billion lb, 3.7% above the previous year. Demand for aluminum semi-fabricated (mill) products in the US and Canada totaled an estimated 1.318 billion lb in June, up 6.1% over the June 2010 total of 1.242 billion lb.
