Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

With copper costs continuing to rise, Delphi Automotive is introducing an Aluminum Cable that performs comparably to traditional copper core cable without the added cost. The technology, which is also lighter than copper cable, is now in production and will be introduced on 2012 model year vehicles. "A vehicle's electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture must support transportation, entertainment, occupant protection and an increasing number of other vehicle systems. Because of its size and complexity, the E/E architecture system also presents a great opportunity for weight and space reduction," said Stefaan Vandevelde, vice president, Delphi Packard E/E Architecture, EMEA, and president, global electrical/electronic distribution systems. Power supply unit (PSU) maker ENG Electronic has recently cut into the aluminum material supply industry and will start shipping aluminum materials and ingots to chassis makers such as Ju Teng, Catcher Technology and Foxconn Technology, and indirectly cut into Apple's supply chain, according to sources from PC players. As the PC industry reaches maturity and is unable to provide growth as strong as in previous years, component makers are also seeking diversification to survive in the new ecosystem. ENG has recently earned a chance to cooperate with Hong Kong-based Asia Aluminum and will start supplying aluminum materials in the fourth quarter. With Intel aggressively pushing Ultrabooks, demand for aluminum-based chassis is expected to increase and boost the company's performance, the...

The use of aluminum by the automotive industry should more than double in four years. The rate is such that in four years we will just have more than 100 per cent growth. The transportation industry accounts for about 26 per cent of aluminum consumption, according to the London Metal Exchange. Carmakers are using more aluminum because of a combination of new legislation in Europe and the U.S., and new wealth across the globe which can be concluded referring to the emerging markets.

Aluminium air pumps from Specialised Air Motors & Transmission (SAMT) are small and light devices that are highly efficient, even when pumping high adhesive liquids with a low flow rate. Featuring quality diaphragms, these air pumps will not be damaged even if running with no input for a long time, and will not suffer a loss of efficiency due to any abrasions. The outlet of the pumps can be shut down at any time if necessary. They will stop immediately and will not cause any power waste, heat production or any abrasion damage. Manual, remote or automatic control can be used to regulate the pumping output. Specialised Air Motors & Transmission's aluminium air pumps are also suitable for use in explosive environments.

Alcoa expects global aluminum demand to grow because of increasing population and urbanization around the world, particularly in China. They have seen many opportunities in China's aerospace, automotive, home appliance, consumer electronics, commercial transportation, and power generation industries. Aluminum is used extensively in these industries because of its light weight, durability, surface qualities and corrosion resistance and also its infinite recyclability. About 75 percent of all aluminum ever made on this planet is still in use today. In their meetings with Chinese leaders, they have been told repeatedly that more environmentally sensitive growth is what China is pursuing. And the extensive use of aluminum will certainly help meet this goal.Alcoa predicts that China's aluminum...

By 2012 the use of aluminum in automobiles could reach record highs, the Aluminum Association reports. The organization cited a Ducker Worldwide survey that shows North American automakers will increase their use of aluminum 53% to 500 pounds by 2025. Fuel-economy standards in the United States are forcing carmakers to seek lighter-weight materials for production. Aluminum is seen as one of the steel industry's most formidable challengers in the race to produce fuel-efficient vehicles. The Aluminum Association, which represents U.S. and foreign-based aluminum producers, says aluminum can replace more than twice as much weight as steel. Alcoa Inc. marketing director Randall Scheps touted the Ducker findings as a sign that "aluminum's time has come" as a major player in new vehicle designs....
