Downstream aluminium producers' operating rates increased slightly this week, and the divergence between sectors continues

This week, the operating rate of major aluminium processors in China remained stable with a slight overall rebound, rising 0.1 per cent month-on-month. Performance was mixed across sectors, as the industry continues a moderate recovery trend. The operating rate for primary aluminium alloys climbed 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 per cent, driven by improved order volume and year-end momentum from automakers to meet their annual targets, with a positive short-term outlook. The operating rate for aluminium wire and cable rose 0.4 percentage points to 64.8 per cent, supported by recovering photovoltaic demand and restored margins, although the sustainability of the upward trend remains to be seen. The operating rate for secondary aluminium rebounded 0.6 percentage points to 53.9 per cent, with...

From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Asia will account for around half of the global aluminum rolled products market in the next five years, at over 12 million tons. These megatrends include population growth, a spreading distribution of wealth, tighter availability of essential resources like water and energy and a desire for a better environmental footprint, he said, and are underpinned by solid growth in key sectors like transportation, canstock and consumer electronics.

In August, China Zhongwang Holdings Ltd, Asia's largest manufacturer of industrial aluminum extrusion parts, reported that the group's net profit for the six months ended June 30, 2011 declined by 80 percent this year to 412 million yuan ($64.5 million) from 2.1 billion a year earlier. This followed the publication of its 2010 full-year results in March whereby net profits declined 26 percent year-on-year. Peugeot eyes partnerships to boost aluminium use

Car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen is considering partnerships with aluminium suppliers as it tries to produce lighter vehicles, its top executive said? "The larger use of aluminium in our cars can only be achieved if we manage to build global and mutually beneficial partnerships," he said. "We are definitely considering entering into strategic supply relationships with some suppliers," he said, adding his group was also looking at plastics and composites.
