From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 at $692m: Two-way exchange of coil, sheet, foil and high-value products

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

New investment strategy: fill your garage with compacted aluminum cans

In the process of complying with CAFE requirements automakers will essentially need to spend about $157 billion to double their fleet’s fuel efficiency. This will likely lead to years of rising sales for makers of aluminum body panels, turbochargers and other light weight components. Based on a Bloomberg report posted on the Pittsburgh Tribune's website, most of this will be achieved by making internal-combustion-engine vehicles lighter and more efficient – even for brands with considerable sales of hybrids and EVs, according to Zoe Lipman, senior manager for transportation solutions at the National Wildlife Federation Climate and Energy Program. Automakers will use turbochargers to add power and efficiency to smaller engines – as Ford has done with their EcoStar engines – and stop/start...

Shipments of aluminum rolled products totaled 720 kilotons for the second quarter of fiscal 2012, a decrease of 2 percent compared to shipments of 737 kilotons in the second quarter of the previous year. This slight decrease in shipments was driven by economic uncertainty in the United States and Europe and unseasonably cool and wet weather across a number of the Company’s operating regions which resulted in customer destocking in the quarter. Net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2012 were $2.9 billion, an increase of 14 percent compared to the $2.5 billion reported in the same period a...

China Zhongwang CFO Mr Cheung shares business vision

Aluminium or steel? Which is the superior material for use in the transportation industry and for building machinery? The debate among engineers continues. The most active SHFE aluminum prices rose after opening lower on Tuesday, with an attempt to regain losses from the previous trading day. However, transactions in spot aluminum markets remained weak due to limited prices increases. Spot aluminum supply in South China was stable, and buying interest among downstream buyers was low. Meanwhile, cargo holders were unwilling to move goods and held prices firmly, with spot prices stabilizing between RMB 16,010-16,030/mt, more resilient to declines compared with East China. Transactions were waning in general.
