Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

While the US aluminum extrusion segment is seeing surprising strength at year's end and many remelters are sold out for January, a few market players say they are uncertain how long the upturn will last. Market players said low inventories and more demand from the automotive sector are behind the increased inquiries in extrusions and believe there may be more pent-up demand next year. Some are projecting Q1 demand will be 10-15% above Q1 2011 levels. And this comes as the building and construction market -- which accounts for about 25% of extrusion demand -- has been a laggard. One extruder said he had one of his best booking months in November, but cautioned that he and others are "holding their breath" over 2012 demand. "We are cautious looking ahead in this market," he said. "It will...

The European Commission (EC) said on December 20th that it had launched an anti-dumping investigation into imports of certain grades of aluminum foil in rolls from China into the European Union. A complaint was lodged on November 9 by the European metals industry group Eurometaux, the EC said. The investigation period was from October 1st, 2010 to September 30th, 2011. This is not the first anti-dumping investigation case faced by China in 2011. On February 14th, 2011, India’s Security Bureau had launched a safeguard investigation into Chinese aluminum plate and foil, but there is no confirmed conclusion yet. China’s monthly exports of aluminum foil used for composite packaging materials to India are between 5,000-8,000 mt, accounting for 10% of total monthly exports of aluminum foil....

Hulamin shareholders will have greeted the rand’s slump against the US dollar with relief. Though it began too late to benefit results in the six months to June, a weaker rand could provide a long- overdue boost to its second-half results. Rand strength has until recently marred an otherwise strong growth story from Hulamin, which is enjoying rising volumes as it phases in capacity created by a R1bn expansion completed in 2009. Hulamin is heavily dependent on the exchange rate. It exports 75% of its production at a fairly stable margin between the cost of aluminium and product selling prices, termed the US dollar rolling margin/ton. Selling prices in SA are also closely dollar-linked. As a guide, every 10c move in the rand against the dollar results in a change in annual headline profit...

Traded prices of spot aluminum in Shanghai were between RMB 15,970-16,000/mt on Thursday, with discounts of RMB 0-30/mt over the SHFE current-month aluminum price. As a result, spot aluminum prices fell below RMB 16,000/mt. Despite narrowing spot discounts due to lower selling interest after the decline, transactions remained quiet.

The global market for aluminum electrolytic capacitors is expected to hit a value of US$10.4 billion by the year 2017, driven by the rising demand for these products in end-use markets such as energy and environment, and their increasing use in products such as inverters. The lower price of these products, when compared to several other capacitor technologies, is also expected to remain a key growth driver in the following years. Other factors fuelling growth in the market include the shift towards flat panel displays in consumer electronics and computer markets, and the continued increase in sales of consumer products and personal computers. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are the ideal choice of dielectric in the consumer A/V (audio and video) products. The demand for AECs is...

The European Commission said Tuesday it had launched an antidumping investigation into imports of certain grades of aluminium foil in rolls from China into the European Union. A complaint was lodged on November 9 by the European metals industry group Eurometaux, representing more than 40% of the total EU production of the product in question, the EC said. The product subject to the investigation is aluminium foil of a thickness of 0.007 mm or more but less than 0.021 mm, not backed, not further worked than rolled but whether or not embossed, in low weight rolls of a weight not exceeding 10 kg. "The complainant has provided evidence that imports of the product under investigation from the country concerned have increased overall in absolute terms and in terms of market share," the EC said...
