From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Housing market gloom effects CSR Construction Company

Construction products company CSR fears the soft housing market and low Aluminium prices will be a drag on its first half earnings. CSR managing director Rob Sindel told the company's annual general meeting on Thursday that earnings will be weighted to the second half of the year, which ends on March 31, 2013. An expected fall in the number of new house starts to around 135,000 for the current year, compared to about 148,000 in the year to March 31, 2012, had affected demand for CSR's building products, which include the Bradford, Monier and Gyprock brands, and its Viridian glass products. Chairman Jeremy Sutcliffe said the core Australian residential and commercial construction markets were under extreme pressure, despite strong underlying demand for housing. "And, while we see reasons...

HELUKABEL introduces flexible, aluminum power cable

HELUKABEL has introduced HELUWIND WK POWERLINE ALU. This diesel locomotive (DLO)-like power cable is made of finely-stranded aluminum and is highly flexible, offering customers the performance capabilities of a standard copper cable, but less expensive. The installation advantage of the flexible POWERLINE ALU is that one length of cable can run from behind the drip loop in the down tower area directly to the inverter in the tower base. It requires only one splice, between the copper loop cable and the power line, and a crimp cable lug to connect the power line to the inverter. Constructed using a finely-stranded aluminum core and wrapped with specially-formulated, heat-resistant insulation and outer jacket, the POWERLINE ALU is flexible and durable with resistance to UV-light, oil and...

Japan aluminum beverage can season starts slow due to rains

Japan's demand for drinks in aluminum cans typically picks up in July due to higher temperatures, but this year canstock output is off to a slow start due to rainy weather, aluminum rolling mill sources said Wednesday. Japan's May cansheet shipments were 40,201 mt and some sources fear the June shipments may fall short of 43,000 mt due to the weather. Since June, rain has hit once every two weekends in the most populous Tokyo area which has discouraged outdoor activities as well as sales of beer and carbonated drinks. Some areas in south Japan marked record high rainfall during the month. "You have a steamy day and the next day it is cold. Alternate cold and hot days make it hard to plan ahead," a mill source said. Meanwhile, cansheet exports from Japan to Thailand and other Asian...

Research to develop aluminium alloys for lightweight vehicles

CIC marGUNE is coordinating a line of research in the Basque Country for developing aluminium alloys with enhanced properties. Aluminium alloys are the future of the automobile sector. Until recently and due to the high costs involved, they have been used solely in aeronautics and, in the case of cars, in interiors or for accessories, aluminium alloys are replacing steel in order to achieve lighter and less contaminant vehicles. These materials with enhanced properties are the result of the research work coordinated by CIC marGUNE, the High Performance Cooperative Manufacturing Research Centre, in collaboration with companies and technological centres in the Basque Country. The work undertaken by these bodies is achieving the enhancement of the mechanical properties of aluminium alloys,...

But the state-run cable manufacturing plant at Patenga in the port city of Chittagong has dropped a proposed plan to set up an aluminium rod manufacturing plant due to lack of fund, sources in the plant said. Sources said that it had proposed to set up the aluminum rod production plant two years back at an estimated cost of Tk 150 million. The proposed project was sent to concerned authorities of the government. Aluminum to help meet fuel economy targets

Truck and auto makers are increasing their use of aluminum in vehicles as they lighten weights to improve fuel economy. Aluminum manufacturers will ship 16% more aluminum to automakers this year versus 2011 as car output climbs 11%, according to Lloyd O’Carroll, an analyst at Davenport & Co. in Richmond, Va., Bloomberg News reported. The average amount of the metal in each vehicle will rise 3%, he said in a June 26 note. Heavy truck manufacturers will increase their use of aluminum by about 19% over the next three years as they use the lighter-weight metal to help improve fuel economy, O’Carroll said. “Fuel economy is so critical that it’s driving a lot of behavior,” O’Carroll told Light & Medium Truck.

Aditya Birla Group has big plans for the aluminum and copper sectors

Despite the current sluggishness in the non-ferrous metals markets, India’s Aditya Birla Group has some pretty big plans for the aluminum and copper sectors. To begin with, the Group’s flagship company, Hindalco, also India’s largest non-ferrous metals producer, has made some headway by raising funds for its biggest greenfield project so far. The Aditya Alumina and Aluminum project in the Indian State of Odisha, seeks to raise approximately US $1.65 billion to compete with other majors in this field, particularly Vedanta. While Hindalco, a Fortune 500 company, goes about its expansion plans, its subsidiary, Novelis, a global leader in aluminum rolled products and aluminum cans recycling, has also announced massive investments plans worth US $ 1 billion to mark its presence in growth...
