From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Monthly Construction MMI Drops to 91

The monthly Construction MMI registered a value of 91 in July, down two from June’s reading of 93. Every component within the Construction MMI fell this past month with the exception of two – Chinese aluminum bar and 62% Australian iron ore fines destined for China. “Nearly all of the components comprising the Construction MMI fell, some only slightly however, which tells us that the global construction industry remains somewhat challenged within the current global economic environment,” said Lisa Reisman Managing Editor of MetalMiner. Chinese 62% Australian iron ore fines crept up a few dollars per dry metric ton as did Chinese aluminum bar prices. The price of US shredded scrap closed the month down 13 percent. For the second month in a row, the weekly US Midwest bar fuel surcharge...

City to work with Aluminum Castings to cut emissions

Mayor Sal Garza and Aluminum Castings President Bret Markum agreed Monday to work together to reduce emissions that will stem from an increase in the company’s manufacturing output. The City Council approved an ordinance Monday that would rezone the company’s property to allow for heavy industrial work as the company plans to expand its facilities and production at 340 S. Kellogg St. Some council members and citizens said allowing for an increase in manufacturing could potentially harm children who frequent day care centers near the company, and that smells emanating from the manufacturer could deter people from patronizing downtown businesses, located just blocks away from Aluminum Castings. The council approved the ordinance by a vote of 5-2; Garza then cast a vote “reflecting the...

Nexans' innovative Lo-Sag conductor to solve Brazil's Electricity Transmission Problems

Nexans, a worldwide leading expert in the cable industry, has worked with Light, Rio de Janeiro's electric utility, to develop the innovative Lo-Sag conductor to help solve Brazil's crucial issue of supplying more electricity to its large urban centres, where the construction of new overhead transmission lines is severely restricted and needs controlled clearance to buildings or natural obstacles. Resulting from a five-year development programme involving Nexans' technology centres in France and Belgium, this innovative overhead line technology consists in a thermal resistant aluminium conductor wrapped around a composite carbon core. Compared with a traditional ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced) which uses steel core, the composite carbon core of the same diameter is much...

University of Exeter develops new technique for Manufacturing complex automobile and aerospace parts

Producing strong, lightweight and complex parts for car manufacturing and the aerospace industry is set to become cheaper and more accurate thanks to a new technique developed by engineers from the University of Exeter. The research team has developed a new method for making three-dimensional aluminium composite parts by mixing a combination of relatively inexpensive powders. Combining these elements causes a reaction which results in the production of particles that are 600 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Around 100 nanometres in size, the reaction uniformly distributes them through the material, making it very strong. The process is based on the emerging technique of Selective Laser Manufacturing (SLM), in which laser manufactures complicated parts from metal powders, at...

Aluminum Castings gets green signal for rezoning

Aluminum Castings will be allowed to increase production in its current location, which until now has been slated for light industrial use only. The Galesburg City Council on Monday approved a rezoning ordinance to allow for heavy industrial work blocks from the downtown district, but not before a large contingent of community members and company representatives debated the merits of allowing such work near day care centers and residences. After an impassioned and at times accusatory public debate, the council approved the measure by a 5-2 vote, with Aldermen Peter Schwartzman, Ward 5, and Corine Anderson, Ward 4, voting against the rezoning. Mayor Sal Garza abstained from the vote. President of Aluminum Castings Bret Markum said part of his company’s planned expansion is to add a second...
