From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

First all-aluminium reflok system installed at GKN Aerospace

GKN Aerospace, has installed 700 m of reflok Aluminium tube and connectors in 50,000sq ft premises in Bristol. The UK-first installation, carried out by GKN facilities manager Inviron and local contracting team J. Bracey Electrical and Lane Air, was part of a retrofit to replace an existing R22 system. The installation used 225 reflok connectors, which doesn’t require brazing or hot works. The site reported that it worked perfectly first time without refrigerant leakage. According to Bracey director Jamie Bracey, the most crucial factor was zero leaks, but that not requiring hot works would save the team three or four hours’ work a night. He said: “We had thought for some time that there must be a better way to cut down costs and meet time constraints and reflok has allowed us to do that,...

Facility to recover Aluminium metal from waste —A Bahraini firm has won a contract to construct a dross processing facility downstream of the massive Aluminium plant being set up by Oman Aluminium Rolling Mills (OARM) at Sohar, a local newspaper reported at the weekend. Taha International Corporation (TIC) will invest in a new system to recover Aluminium metal from dross, which is a by-product of Aluminium smelting and re-melting. Dross is typically recycled using salts and flux to recover available metal and the residue is dumped in landfills — a practice frowned upon worldwide for environmental reasons. However, Taha's proprietary processing uses no such salts or flux. Instead, the residual dross is refined into non-toxic oxides suitable for numerous downstream applications, including...
