1100 Aluminium industry workers face job loss in Nigeria

A total of 650 workers in Nigeria’s aluminium industry were sacked in December 2012, with 1,100 other facing an uncertain future, the Country Head, Tower Aluminium Plc, Dr. Jinesh Dugad, has said. Dugad, who said this during a press conference and factory tour of the company at Sango Ota, Ogun State, blamed the development on poor government policies, which had affected the development of local industries adversely. The Tower Aluminium boss did not only blame the Federal Government for the development, he also accused it of implementing importation policies, which have turned the country into a dumping ground. Koga A-limited launches1130g Aluminium racer

Koga today announced news of their A-Limited, an aluminium frame weighing just 1130g and pitched as a serious alternative to carbon fibre race bikes. We’ve been saying it for some time that there’s still life in aluminium yet. The material is a common sight at the affordable end of most bike ranges, but above a certain price point carbon is king. It seems the industry might just be listening as there’s an emerging trend for serious aluminium frames such as Cannondale Caad10 and the new Kinesis Aithein, showing that there is still tons of potential for aluminium as a credible alternative to carbon. So it's good to see another company investing in the material. Aluminium has a lot of the qualities you want in race frame, it's light and stiff, and with the latest developments the material...

Use of aluminum over steel in automotive sector brings respite to the aluminum producers

Carmakers are using record amounts of aluminum to replace heavier steel, providing relief to producers of the metal confronting excess supplies and depressed prices. Aluminum content in vehicles is rising about 5 percent a year and growth will accelerate in the next decade as drivers seek improved fuel economy and lower emissions, according to Gayle Berry, a London-based analyst at Barclays Plc. “This is one of the reasons why aluminum has the most bullish long-term demand outlook of all the base metals,” Berry said, without disclosing forecasts. Producers are hungry for new markets, even at the expense of steelmakers. At current aluminum prices, which are more than a third below 2008 highs, at least 30 percent of aluminum companies aren’t making money, according to Moscow-based United...

Tower Aluminium tasks govt on protectionist policy

Stakeholders in the Aluminium sector have called on the Federal Government to review its protectionist policy in the sector, in order to protect local manufacturers from what they describe as unfair competition in the sector. According to them, failure to do so, may lead to more companies closing shops and moving out of the country. Group Managing Director and Country Head of Tower Aluminium Nigeria Plc, Dr. Jinesh Chandra Dugad, made the call recently, at its Ota complex, in Ogun State. Dugad bemoaned a situation where importation of aluminium products is encouraged to the detriment of locally produced ones. He expressed concern that the country was complacent being a trading and not manufacturing economy noting that the country’s expanding ratio of unemployment would drastically reduce...

Unilever freshens up deodorant packaging with compressed cans

Unilever will today unveil a major packaging breakthrough, after scientists spent years sweating over designs for a more efficient compressed aerosol deodorant can.The consumer goods giant is adamant there were no "underarm" tactics used when they developed the new aerosol spray, which is half the size of the traditional can, but should last just as long. The new 75ml can, which will be available for the Sure, Dove and Vaseline brands, will hit shelves today and, if successful, could be rolled out to other brands. Unilever claims the new cans are the first major packaging reduction initiative for aerosol deodorants since they were introduced in the late 1960s.
