Japan’s Honda Motor Corp. revealed on Monday that it has developed a new technology that will allow steel and aluminum to be joined together, and thus used in new applications in car manufacturing. One of the first places the technology will be put to use is in using aluminum for a car’s outer door panel, which has usually been made of steel, starting with the 2013 Acura RLX model to go on sale in the U.S. in March. Honda explains that several different technologies had to be developed in order to address the problems in joining two dissimilar metals, such as preventing corrosion, as well as thermal deformation caused by steel and aluminum’s different expansion rates. Three of the identified technological developments that have allowed the use of aluminum in the outer door panel are the...

Apple has won a new patent covering "microslot antenna" technology that could enable the next iPhone, iPad or MacBook to be thinner, or could leave more space within the device's housing for internal components. The technology could also allow Apple to make an all-aluminium iPhone. Apple Insider reports that the patent, which was granted to Apple by the US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday, describes technology that would allow antenna assets just a few microns wide to be integrated into housing of an iPhone, or other portable device such as a MacBook, making then almost invisible to the user.
