Chinese aluminium alloy cable market may grow fast in 5 years

With the developments of West-to-east electricity transmission project, electricity transform project and the urbanization process, the needs of cable are in a growing trend. The Report of Chinese Cable Industry Analysis said that in the next 5 years, power cable market will continue to grow at a speed of 8%-9% every year. In the past, copper conductor cable was the most common cable in the market. But there is an obvious imbalance between supply and demand over these few years, and copper price is growing too fast. Some other flaws such as the difficulties and high cost of installation, easy to be stolen and aging problem, also inspired the voice of replacing copper conduct cable. Nowadays more and more users are aiming at a new alloy material--aluminium alloy AA8030 conductor, which is...

Hulamin earnings rise to R64m despite volatile market conditions

Aluminium manufacturer Hulamin achieved a 19% increase in headline earnings to R64-million for the year ended December 31, 2012, from R54-million in 2011, during what CEO Richard Jacob described as an “up and down” year. “With rand aluminium prices remaining fairly stable, the metal price revaluation declined from a loss of R34-million in 2011 to a loss of R2-million in 2012, after recording a profit of R15-million for the first six months of 2012. The weakening of the rand towards the end of the year has contributed to the improved financial results,” he said. Turnover for the year decreased to R6.54-billion in 2012 from R6.91-billion in 2011 on lower rolled products sales, which totalled 194 000 t compared with 208 000 t in the previous year. Automakers switching to aluminium alloy wheel hubs

More and more automobile owners prefer aluminium alloy wheel hub for its appearance, comfort and safety. At present almost all the new types use aluminium alloy wheel hubs. And there are more owners who changed their old type wheel hubs to aluminium hubs. The basic material of aluminium hubs is aluminium, certain amount of manganese, magnesium, chromium and titanium were added. Compared to steel hubs, aluminium hubs are safer, more comfortable and more energy-efficient. Thus more and more automobiles take aluminium alloy hubs as standard configuration. Three main characters of aluminium alloy hubs: Energy-efficient Aluminium alloy hub is lighter and the accuracy of manufacturing is high. There is a small possibility that the hub will be out of shape when it is spinning with a high speed....

Automakers using aluminium to shed the Pounds

Automakers are putting some of their best-selling vehicles on a diet in a race to meet strict new fuel-efficiency regulations that will kick in by the middle of the next decade. The trend has automakers introducing lighter vehicles and embarking on demonstration projects designed to carve hundreds of kilograms off their most popular vehicles. Last month, for example, GM received major awards for its new Cadillac ATS sedan that weighs 3,315 pounds (1503.7 kilograms), making it one of the lightest vehicles in its class, thanks in large part to an all-aluminium hood, magnesium engine mounts, and other lightweight materials. As they contemplate the new fuel standards, which require cars to have an average miles-per-gallon rating of 54.5, automakers cannot rely on consumers to buy more hybrid...

Aleris to shut Roxboro coil-coating plant by May

US aluminum sheet maker Aleris plans to close its Roxboro, North Carolina, coil-coating plant by the end of May, spokesman Jason Saragian said Wednesday. Aleris will continue to service its coil-coating customers from its other coil-coating facilities, specifically its Asheville, Ohio, and Lewisport, Kentucky, plants. He said the company recently finished installing a new wide-sheet coating facility at its Asheville plant, which made it ideal to absorb capacity from the Roxboro plant. Overall coating capacity will not decrease because of this move, Saragian said, and will actually increase because of the addition to the Asheville plant. The company will transition the current production over the next few months and will do everything possible to ensure a seamless transition with no...

Imperial Innovations invest on aluminium forming technology business

Imperial Innovations Group, a leading technology commercialization and investment group, has invested £0.5m in Impression Technologies, an aluminium forming technology business based on intellectual property developed at Imperial College London. The new funds will be used to support the development of its aluminium forming process, manufacture demonstration parts and develop a technical and commercial team. The world's automotive and transport industries will have to make a step change in their use of aluminium if they are to meet the environmental challenges of reducing energy consumption and carbon emission targets. Aluminium is difficult to form into complex shapes due to its limited ductility. Professor Lin of Imperial College London and Professor Dean of the University of Birmingham,...

Aluminium can market affected by Health-conscious Americans

U.S. aluminium can sales are set to slow in 2013 for a third straight year as more consumers ditch sodas for healthier options such as water and iced teas, traditionally bottled in plastic or glass. The loss of market share in the fizzy drinks capital of the world, also due to loud anti-obesity campaigns such as those promoted by Walt Disney and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has forced producers of sheet aluminium for cans, as well as can fabricators, to seek new, more profitable markets abroad. Novelis, the world's largest flat-rolled aluminium maker, and can producer Ball Corp (BLL.N) have both invested in Asia and in Brazil, where they expect to see can sales spike as the 2014 football World Cup and 2016 Olympics approach. Alcoa, the top U.S. aluminium producer, and Novelis,...
