Land Rover’s next-generation Defender, due in 2015, will be safer, more efficient, easier to drive and potentially a lot lighter thanks to a sophisticated new aluminium platform. However, the next iteration of the iconic British off-roader will also be so distinctive, says Land Rover Design Director and board member Gerry McGovern that the company is unlikely to preview it via a concept version for fear of it being copied. “I'd be very worried about actually showing a concept of this because it's so good everyone will want to copy it,” McGovern told at last week’s New York motor show, where the new Range Rover Sport made it world debut. Most electric vehicles and hybrids utilize lithium ion, lithium polymer, or nickel metal hydride batteries. There are inefficiencies in all of them. Most EVs have a range of only 100 miles. Hybrids usually can achieve electric only distances of about 30 miles. Those numbers have greatly limited the market for these zero and low emission cars. Phinergy’s metal-air batteries might just change that. Phys.org, an Israeli battery company called Phinergy ,has developed a new type of aluminum-air battery that would be able to fuel an electric vehicle for 1,000 miles. With that range, EVs are looking a lot more attractive especially for people who travel a great deal either for pleasure or business. Cars using these batteries would produce no carbon emissions helping the environment. Most car...

Russian aluminum giant Rusal is considering setting up a separate company on the basis of rolling production at its Ukrainian asset - Zaporizhia Aluminum Smelter which would only produce aluminum rods. A spokesman for the plant said that the idea of setting up a new company on the basis of existing capacity at ZALK, in which the debts of the main company will not be listed, is currently under consideration. "This will enable the new company to work steadily and continue to produce a monthly over 1,500 tons of rod from primary aluminum, settle payments and deductions as well as saving the main shareholder from the headache of the constant threat of nationalization for ZALK as the remaining capacity is almost beyond recovery and in this sense has no value," the spokesman said. However,...
