Hope have stepped up to the mark with the Mono RS wheelset, available with six different hub colours and Mavic Open Pro rims or the Stan’s No Tubes Alpha 400 that we are testing here. While the Open Pro is a long-established winter favourite, we’ve chosen the Stan’s option for a chance to conduct further testing of the Schwalbe Ultremo ZX tubeless tyre. The rims are a triple channel, aluminium extrusion that is pitched as a tougher rim than their Alpha 340 rim, and as such, better suited to heavier riders and for general longevity. They are a welded joint construction with 32-hole drilling; the rim is not fitted with eyelets. The brake surface is machined for braking consistency and includes a wear indicator. The rim also incorporates Stan’s Bead Socket Technology, one they claim allows...

New capacity, import pressure and inventory overhang could push spot prices for aluminium plate downwards, according to Kaiser Aluminum Corp chairman, president and ceo Jack Hockema. The California-based aluminium company is seeing “intensifying short-term competitive pressure” on spot prices, which is expected to cause “price erosion” for both aerospace plate and general engineering plate in 2014, Hockema said in an earnings conference call with analysts on Friday October 18. Spot business represents a “significant” portion – though less than half – of Kaiser’s plate sales and has an impact on the company, he said, but declined to put a number on the spot pressure, which he characterised as a “moving target”. “[We expect] some pretty significant pressure on spot prices for plate for next...

Alcoa and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have launched a cooperative effort to develop an aluminum solution to a grave threat to soldier safety: Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The solution, a single-piece aluminum hull for ground combat vehicles, would replace today’s assembled hulls and deliver even greater strength and durability. In addition to safety benefits, the single-piece hull would reduce vehicle weight and assembly time, and, therefore, overall cost. "For decades, the Army has recognized the survivability benefits of a single-piece hull due to its thickness, size and shape for ground combat vehicles," said Dr. Ernest Chin of the Army Research Laboratory. "Our collaborative effort to develop continuous and seamless aluminum hull technology has the potential to be a game...

Alcoa Wheels rolled a new aluminum wheel alloy, its first in 45 years, at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition on Sunday in Orlando, Fla., and will introduce its first new truck wheel featuring this alloy early next year. Called MagnaForce, Alcoa says it is 16.5% stronger on average than the industry standard, Alcoa’s 6061 alloy, in similar applications. It says the innovation is due to increasing demand for lighter weight products that increase fuel efficiency. “Alcoa is making truck wheel history with our innovative aluminum material,” said Tim Myers, President, Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. “No manufacturer has produced a wheel with an alloy superior to Alcoa’s 6061 material. Our MagnaForce alloy today opens the door to production of the...

There was more to be celebrated than just an impressive new showroom for the central New Jersey home remodeling company. In just four and a half winter months, Somerville Aluminum transformed a 15,000 foot building into a showroom, design center, office complex and warehouse utilizing local building contractors and service providers — giving a boost to local businesses during a time of year typically slow for work. They were assisted by the local Branchburg Building Department, who guided the remodeling contractor through the complex process of demolition to retail opening in such a short amount of time, and further aided by the help of state and federal officials to secure Small Business Association support, which gave them the ability to increase their workforce by over 20% — all with...

Most solar cells used in homes and industry are made using thick layers of material to absorb sunlight, but have been limited in the past by relatively high costs. Many new, lower cost designs are limited as their layer of light-absorbing material is too thin to extract enough energy. In new research, scientists have demonstrated that the efficiency of all solar panel designs could be improved by up to 22 per cent by covering their surface with aluminium studs that bend and trap light inside the absorbing layer. At the microscopic level, the studs make the solar panels look similar to the interlocking LEGO building bricks played with by children across the world. The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports by scientists from Imperial College London and international...

The winners of the World Aluminium Aerosol Can Award 2013 were presented at this year’s congress of AEROBAL, the global association for manufacturers of aluminium aerosol cans. The jury that chose the best aerosol cans was no less capable or globally active: Editors from 12 well-known and respected packaging publications from five continents selected the winners once again this year. The coveted award for products already on the market went to Tubex from Germany for its aluminium aerosol can for the ‘wellaflex’ brand. The can attracts great attention at the point of sale: In the middle...
