Aluminum cars lightweight in more way than one

So the auto industry is going to use aluminum to make autos lighter to increase gas mileage. That sounds like some things the government would do, like raise the taxes to help the people. In the early 1930s that was tried by a auto(maker) named Pierce Arrow. A big beautiful auto, and it had a lot of a aluminum in it, and folks who had one were quite proud until they drove it on a winter street that had been salted. The salt ate that aluminum like a 5-year-old eating Tootsie Rolls. I don't remember seeing many on the roads after that. An ultralight auto would be hard to control in a strong crosswind, too, and think what it would be like to be hit by any kind of other vehicle except a bike. One that I know is that me and my wife are going to hang on to are our Kias. They do not put drivers...

The i8, a sports car that will use both an internal combustion engine and electric motors to power the car, will be next in line. The i8 too will come to India at a later stage. Both the i3 and the i8 will come to India as completely built units. The i3, which measures less than 4m in length, uses carbon fibre reinforced polymer or CFRP for the body shell that sits on an all aluminium rolling chassis. The car weighs less than 1200kg...

Breakthrough in study of aluminum to yield new technological advances

Researchers at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon today announced a scientific advance that has eluded researchers for more than 100 years – a platform to fully study and understand the aqueous chemistry of aluminum, one of the world's most important metals. The findings, reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, should open the door to significant advances in electronics and many other fields, ranging from manufacturing to construction, agriculture and drinking water treatment. Aluminum, in solution with water, affects the biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and anthrosphere, the scientists said in their report. It may be second only to iron in its importance to human civilization. But for a century or more, and despite the multitude of products based...

Iceland seeks UK funding for subsea cable project

Iceland's president Olafur Grimsson is expected this week to call on the British government to provide financial support for the construction of a £4.3bn subsea electricity cable – which will be the longest in the world – linking his country to the UK's electricity grid. The ambitious project, drawing on hydro geothermal and wind power generation, could deliver five terawatt-hours a year to Britain at a cost 15% lower than offshore wind, according to Iceland's state-owned electricity firm Landsvirkjun. Grimsson's presence at a conference in London on Friday, arranged by Landsvirkjun and the British-Iceland chamber of commerce, underlines the seriousness with which the project is being taken. The two governments have been exploring proposals for a cable after signing a memorandum of...

Aluminum shipments by Japan expand as auto demand improves

Shipments of rolled-aluminum products by Japanese fabricators to domestic and overseas markets expanded 3.6 percent in September, the third straight month of increase, as demand from automakers recovered. Volume rose to 164,532 metric tons last month from 158,835 tons a year earlier, the Japan Aluminium Association said in a report today. Demand from the auto industry expanded for the first time in 14 months as consumers rushed to buy vehicles before the government raises the sales tax to 8 percent next April from 5 percent, it said. Members of the association include UACJ Corp., which was created through the merger of Furukawa-Sky Aluminum Corp. and Sumitomo Light Metal Industries Ltd., Japan’s largest and second-biggest aluminum mills.
