ARABAL 2013: Challenges remain for growth of GCC’s downstream aluminium industry

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has all the necessary factors for a growing downstream aluminium industry but risks remain, delegates said at the 2013 Arabal conference in Abu Dhabi. “[The downstream industry] needs further regulation, while at the same time it must defend home markets by creating a level playing field,” Walid Al Attar, vp of marketing and sales at Emal/Dubal, said. “A particular area of concern is aggressive selling by Chinese companies,” he pointed. China’s production of extrusion billets has seen huge growth and has led to “substantial growth in Chinese exports of aluminium products from extrusions”, Al Attar noted. The GCC’s demand for downstream products is predominantly for extruded products, the majority of which go to the construction industry. This is...

Court annuls anti-dumping duty on foil by Council Regulation (EC)

On 5th November 2013, the General Court of the European Union upheld the application of RUSAL Armenal ZAO (“Armenal”), a foil-producing subsidiary of UC RUSAL located in Armenia, for annulment of a Council regulation that had imposed an anti-dumping duty on imports of aluminium foil by Armenal into the European Union. Council Regulation (EC) No. 925/2009 of 24 September 2009 had imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty and a provisional duty on imports of certain aluminium foil originating in Armenia, Brazil, and the People’s Republic of China. In December 2009 Armenal filed an application in Luxembourg against the Council for annulment of the Regulation. Armenal argued, among other things, that the Regulation violated Article 2(1) - (6) of Council Regulation (EC) No. 384/96 of 22 December...

Aluminum alloy will continue to replace copper in Chinese cable

The use of copper in cable will remain under threat of subsitution from aluminum alloy in China as a result of the continuing high spread between copper and aluminium prices. Aluminum alloy usage in cables captured the spotlight during a recent copper conference in Kunming, held by Antaike. “At present, 50% of the cables are made of aluminum alloy in North America, and this number is about 60% in Europe and 70% in South Korea and Japan, while this number is less than 10% in China. "Under the current high copper price and fierce price competition among cable producers, many cable producers are seeking for technology to lower costs,” Zhenping You, an analyst from Antaike, stated in the conference. China’s cable industry accounted for 64% of China's total copper consumption in 2012, reaching...

SMARTDRESS welding system allows automatic aluminium welding for the automotive sector

European researchers have found a way make the automotive sector more eco-friendly, while at the same time cutting production costs. The EU-funded project SMARTDRESS ('Adaptive tip dress control for automated resistance spot welding') is developing a fully automated control system to improve crucial welding processes. The global automotive sector produces around 60 million vehicles per year. In the primary stages of vehicle construction, manufacturers rely heavily on resistance spot-welding (RSW), a process in which steel or other metal surfaces are joined by heat generated by electric current. In this phase of car production, manufacturers use RSW guns with electrode 'tips' - the elements that are placed directly in contact with the metal pieces to transmit current. When these tips get...
